Kaiji
I like the series, but looking back on it, something bugs me.

Dude had his fingers chopped off, yet in the next scene he's just sitting calmly outside, not writhing in pain. Like losing his fingers is just a minor inconvenience

Is this a rare example of Fukumoto's bad writing?

The version of mahjong they play isn't even real mahjong. All you really need to know is the basic concept of "you build a hand out of sets/sequences of tiles, and then wait for your opponent to discard the tile that completes your hand. Certain sets are worth more than others"
then the characters will explain "discarding this tile is scary because he might be waiting for an abrakazam worth a million points, or maybe that's too flashy and he's going for a simple bibbity-bobbity-boo instead, or maybe he knows that I know he knows that would be a risky play in a normal game so he's expecting me to psyche myself out" as they go and you'll get the gist

This is a lie. Mahjong, even the simplified version in Kaiji, requires a minimum of three years of academic study to understand the basic ruleset and learn all 17,023 yaku, followed by at least five years of doctorate-level independent study to understand basic strategy before novice practitioners are permitted to approach a real table. You will never learn mahjong.
Anonymous No.281774856 >>281775440
>>281774067
No, lets be real for a moment

Everyone who says Kaiji part 3 is simpler than Akagi because it's "simplified" mahjong is wrong in the sense that P3 goes quite indepth into the meta and possibilities given by this "simpler" ruleset. There's a lot of variables at play and reading that part with mahjong knowledge will let you appreciate stuff like Kaiji balancing offense and defense.

HOWEVER it's true that this game is a game where two sides just take turns discarding tiles and hoping to not discard the one their opponent is waiting on. No calls, no tiles stealing, and the hand building happens prior to this. In that sense it's easy to follow.

My suggestion: get a list of yaku (pic related) alongside you as you read this part. The restrictions are simple: you need 4 points (han) or more in your hand. 1 han is provided implicitly (riichi) to both players, so Kaiji and his opponent can do multiple tactics to get the 3 remaining hans: honitsu, combination of pinfu/tanyao/sanshoku, bonus tile (called "dora") which grants 1 han for each one you have...
It's not really complicated as long as you check the sheet to see what Kaiji is building. It's very straightforward, actually!

All you need is to make sure you understand a winning hand in mahjong is 4 sets (sequences of three tiles, eg 345, or same like 444) and 1 pair. You'll be waiting for the last tile to be discarded by your opponent, so there are multiple patterns of tiles you can wait on! The more, the better. For instance, if you have three sets, one pair, and the last set to be completed is currently 23, that means you can win on 1 (123) or 4 (234), which is a good situation! On the other hand, if your last set is currently 13, you can only win on 2, which is a tough situation...

Akagi is at this weird spot where knowing mahjong lets you pick up some of the 5D brain stuff but also some of the bullshit (usually before Washizu actually) because it's a work more focused on philosophy than meta.
You should definitely read Akagi and Ten if you haven't btw.

I haven't had full use of my right hand for a few months due to an injury, and I think you're probably just really underestimating how much your hands casually help each other out. On the other hand, I autistically told myself that I needed to learn how to play mahjong before I read akagi, even though people would often tell me that I really didn't need to. I do think it was worth learning how to play beforehand. The best example I can think of is that I don't think you can really get how impactful the transparent tiles in Washizu mahjong are if you've never played the game yourself before. Reading through 17 Steps in Kaiji was actually my first introduction to the game, and while I could follow what exactly was happening, it was again the impact of it all that was lost on me. It wasn't until I started playing myself that I really understood how stressful playing a match where both players are in tenpai off the bat would be. I've been meaning to re-read kaiji (and catch up) now that I understand mahjong for just this reason. FKMT does do a great job of making the game (and really, all of his conflicts) understandable for every reader, but there is 100% more to be added when you have personal experiences with the struggles in his story.
I am still a bad mahjong player, though. I know enough to play some soul with the lads while crushing brews, though, and I think that's good enough for me

Yeah, I feel that both series compliment each other in a way I haven't seen anywhere else, Akagi builds, well, Akagi, as the legend of an ideal man. Ten reminds you that at the end of the day, the greatest man in the world is still human. I genuinely wonder what was the dynamic for all the people that read Ten before Akagi
>>281776139
Yeah, I'm no pro either, but it made me meet a bunch of people I wouldn't have met otherwise, that alone makes it worth it. I still maintain that watching without knowing how to play, learning how to play, and rewatching (or re-reading) is the best experience, picrel is real

Also mahjong is not that difficult. I’ve gotten plenty of my normie friends and my family learning and having fun even in their first match. You’re just creating 4 melds and a pair. A meld can be a sequence of numbers like 123 or 456 or triplets like 777 or 888. Then your hand needs a winning condition called a β€œyaku” which there are a lot of. The difficult and confusion of the game comes in memorizing Yaku but it’s really not so bad. They’re just poker hands that are worth more points based off how rare or difficult it is to make that hand. There’s simple yaku like all simples, which is having a hand with no honor tiles (dragons winds) or terminals (1’s or 9’s) or yakuhai (having 3 of a dragon tile or your rounds wind tile), or like all triplets etc etc. so many options. It’s literally just super poker. And in Kaiji the mahjong arc is basically the two players making almost complete hands worth a lot of points and being one tile away from victory, both of them discard tiles in hopes that they don’t play the tile that the other needs to complete their super powerful hand.

Depending on where it goes I could definitely see it being in my top 3 Fukumoto works. The few times I've tried looking around Japanese twitter and stuff it seems like there are a good amount of Japanese people talking about it, too.

I think a lot of people are just scared off by the golf stuff the same way the mahjong scares off western people from his other stuff. I think some people in the west at least too were kind of put off by the supernatural part of it.

it's a real example of adrenaline. His fingers were not cut off by surprise so his body prepared endorphins to subtract the pain. It's why the most painful things are the ones that are not painful enough for you the body to go into endorphin mode for like if you stub your toe. Also crying and rolling around in pain is a learned thing. Saying that sounds REALLY like im a tough guy but in hospitals you'll see people squel in pain and its very awkward and then other people in worse pain able to express their in a lot of pain but it hurts less for them. It's not a matter of being tougher but because of the way people are raised their reaction to pain is different.

It's very sad though because a lot of babies and children are imprinted in a way so that if a tiny noise or stumble occurs they cry because they have stupid guardians who reinforce this behaviour by going OOOOH OUUHH THATS BADD OHHH DONT CRY DONT CRYY.

It's also worth noting in the manga and the anime does it too shows time has elapsed in a way that Kaiji has been in shock and been treated so all that's left is the pain of his huge loss.

There's also a thing in animals and humans as well to a degree where the body doesn't feel pain and will remove instinctual limits on things. For example if your finger is stuck somewhere and the best thing to do is to cut it off because idk you're sliding down a mountain and there are wolves coming to get you and your finger is stuck in two boulders that YOU CANNOT MOVE OUT.

Its different for Kaiji because he's not the one pulling it on himself which makes it more scary. Also I recommend for people if you're getting something removed from your body or you're on a rollercoaster do not close your eyes becuase keeping them open and seeing whats going on will keep you a lot calmer.

The fact he lost because he wanted to waste a round to make it look "more legit" would be so agonising. He always had a chance to win.

I feel that his resolve also plays a part in it. Not only did he know it was coming, he outright accepted it, remember that he straight up said "The time to act proud is during defeat".

I think you're misremembering, Hyodo was the one who purposefully wasted a round, Kaiji tried to rig it so that he could just instantly win but Hyodo saw through his trick instantly so he spoiled it and Kaiji panicked instead of thinking about how Hyodo would rig it instead.

"The future is in our hands" is the overall message of the series. Kaiji wouldnt end with him being on a passive role unless he wills it.

I’m still reading P3, but I don’t see how it would as an anime at all. It would be the biggest slideshow ever
>90% of the dialogue so far are internal thoughts
>Fukumoto reuses the same reaction faces every chapter

It takes like 30 minutes tops to learn mahjong, just download mahjong soul do the tutorial play a few games against the easy AI and you'll know more than enough to enjoy saki and any other mahjong related anime / manga.

The only hard part of mahjong is the scoring which doesn't even matter.
