It's more about access to easy money anyway. Even if Japan gets another bubble economy, I doubt we'll see the same sort of speculative investment in anime again, so there would have to be some sort of new, likely dubious, funding scheme to prop up the industry. And there's also the issue of taste and market demand that would need to shift if you're after a certain type of look.

I actually have a certain fondness for the one off OVA. Even if they don't tell a full story by themselves I think there's something neat about just seeing a set up, some characters and a fantasy world they're in. It's like reading an old pulp story.

most of NGE's inherited ideas are pretty easy to track
>Shinji is boy Nadia. Because he's a boy he gets look down on for things that characters tolerated or saw as endearing in Nadia
>Gendo is 'Nadia's dad but evil' on paper and visually he draws from Professor Shizuma from Giant Robo and Doctor Tenma from Astro Boy. but he also has archtypal ties to the captain in Space Battleship Yamato who was the inspiration for Captain Nemo/Nadia's dad (along with the original Captain Nemo by Orson Welles)
>SEELE are the Neo-Atlanteans from Nadia represented by Monoliths from Space Odyssey
>lore-wise, evas and angels are both 'giant warrior gods' from nausicaa. visually and aesthetically, the evas resemble and fight like Casshern Neo Human, in no small part due to much of the combat scenes being done by Tatsunoko
>the bridge scenes, launch sequences, OST, OP, and overall aesthetic come from Gerry Anderson's UFO. NERV is functionally the same as SHADO
>Rei is based on Lt. Gay Ellis, a SHADO operative on the moonbase in UFO
>Kaworu is Satan/Akira from Devilman
>Instrumentality is inspired by the Ide in Space Runaway Ideon
>Second Impact comes from the planetary devastation in Nausicaa and Future Boy Conan
>the aesthetics of the angels and all the cross imagery comes from Ultraman
also mention to Laputa Castle In the Sky which is the memetic link between Future Boy Conan and Nausicaa

Because shorter run times mean they can better focus the budget but also means they don't have as much space to develop their plots. And what do you even mean by "mediocre" stories anyways. Most of the time they do exactly what they set out to do to a pretty decent extent. I swear the internet has turned every dullard with an opinion into a critic who wouldn't know a story if a novel smacked them in the head.

My only previous exposure was the CGI movie so I was surprised at how the main focus was Harlock's invisible war rather than actually being space outlaws. I was also surprised to find out Queen Esmerelda is actually her own character in the setting. I'd seen her movie at some point and just assumed the idea was she existed in an AU timeline where she was Maetel if Maetel became Harlock, so to speak

It really depresses me how so few people care about actual video quality in their video format. If it's not cropped to fuck to fake widescreen it's denoised to hell. Disctotek puts out some okay releases but they're one company but nobody else cares because they don't think the audience will care and the saddest part is they're right. People will see bars on the sides or top and botton and lose their damn mind.

Watch Nightwalker, it started out a 4 episodes long OVA, but a TV producer liked what he saw enough to turn it into a 13 episodes long show so they used the first 4 episodes originally produced to be OVAs as the show's first arc and then produced 9 more episodes with a TV budget so the show would be 13 episodes long, I'm just saying this because while the show takes a HUGE fall in terms of quality after episode 4 they didn't tone down any of the blood and nudity the OVAs had surprisingly enough so the episodes produced for TV still have gore and tits

After checking the credits it's no wonder I thought of Ryu Knight, Ito Takehiko was character designer for both. The credits for KO Beast are kinda nuts, Ito (who also did Outlaw Star) is co-creator with the guys behind Saber Marionette J, among other things. It's a team-up of standard-bearers of the 90s. A certain type of standard anyway.

Especially V-Darn, I don't think you'll find a Human (elf) who looks like this in another decade.

Zeorymer moves a fair amount, they throw in some cuts that are stills and pulled cels between fully animated stuff, its just that the layouts and timing often are functional but not that interesting, and the choreography is a lot of blasting beams back and forth. 45 booruable cuts for a 4 episode OVA isn't slideshow tier.

It made the Lejiverse feel interconnected, provided some cool background information about the Cosmo Dragoon, and I liked the way it utilized the whole time-machine gimmick to show us the events of the first episodes from a different perspective (which truly makes you feel for Tetsuro), which also served to reinforced the theme that the choices we make are what define us as individuals.

It tells a simple story but honestly it's practically a master class in economic story telling and pacing. In just four episodes it manages to introduce all of it's characters, give them stand out personalities, manages to bring them all together, turning rivals into genuine friends in a way that feels organic and subtle and have a satisfying pay off. Even the villain gets a moment where his fall to the dark side feels sympathetic without trying to justify it. It's just good. You could probably edit together into a single movie it feels that tight.
