Majority of yaoi is basically regular shoujo romance but with two hot guys instead of a guy and a girl. Usually the relationship dynamics are largely the same with one of them "wearing the pants" so to speak, and the characters are idealized to appeal to female fantasies and don't act like real life men or gays.
There's sometimes other things at play like the female readers feeling competitive or jealous of female MCs so only having male characters avoids that.
