Both the official TL and fan TLs are bad.
The Yen Press translation has a few poor name translations, awkward phrasing (this varies by volume since its not the same TLers every time), and a few notable errors. The side stories are worse since they got someone who wasn’t familiar with the main story to do at least some of them, so there’s notable inconsistencies between the EX volumes and the main story (especially EX1). Their current pace of releases is also slower than the pace of Japanese releases, and they’re about 10 volumes behind.
But the fan translation uses the WN text only (completely outdated for the first five arcs with lots of characterization and plot details that are no longer valid, along with poorer pacing), is mostly machine TL’d which means it has its own set of TL errors going on, and is wildly inconsistent in writing style/quality owing to the multiple people working on it (often with 3+ translators and editors on individual chapters). WCT also does an annoying “character name before each dialogue line” format that kills readability. Arc 7 onward is generally *less* bad and Arc 4 is somewhat better than the rest of arcs 1-6 in terms of quality.
The “best” way to read Re: Zero is to just use the Yen Press release up until arc 7, then switch to the WCT fan TL.
