People seem to forget even stuff we revere in the west as huge anime fantasy shows were barely middling successes at best in Japan. Even if you track it as far back as Lodoss, there's probably less than a dozen fantasy shows that were true hits, let alone the most popular/best selling of its year or even season. I take it you didn't watch Bye Bye Earth or the cockslap to fan's faces that was Übel Blatt's anime adaptation. And no, neither of those did well in sales either. And seriously, I just couldn't believe how good some of the Uma Musume stuff is vs the expectations I had. Season 2, the Road to the top ONAs, the movie and Cindirella Gray are the only sports anime that have made me feel my blood pump or just emotionally invested in general in years.

I saw both seasons and It was alright, but it wasn't a big hit in BD sales or in streaming viewership in Japan either, which is my point. The Übel Blatt manga is a Dark Fantasy almost as good as Berserk in some aspects, but between its anime adaptation's quality and Japan's lukewarm reception of fantasy, I wouldn't be surprised if even most of Futaba haven't seen it.
