I don't dislike Hanayama either, I don't really dislike any Baki character honestly because they're all larger than life figures with their own strong charm that makes them very unique, but I do think this kind of inconsistencies and favoritism does end up doing some degree of disservice to them, Baki himself being the most flagrant case given how good the first series despite a lot of asspulls.

Honestly I think a major problem Itagaki has right now is that he's struggling to make some characters interact with each other after years and years of preestablished feats and "rules" to their characterization, most characters in Baki do not really develop while others do so, it's hard to write something coherent around this idea and there's a lot of landmines you make for yourself, which is partly why Jack and Hanayama really did not interact at all until now, or with Oliva.

You're definitely onto something, the way Itagaki has talked about how he writes in interviews seems in line with it. He says he gets to know the characters and then allows them to direct the story, only taking actions he believes they would in their reality. It's what makes the best moments so strong, but it's also what makes offbeat meetings like Jack and Hanayama not feel quite the same. It's new to the characters, so it's new to Itagaki. The conversation they've been having here is very early stages, which doesn't make for the most pleasant read when keeping up with the serial.

My primary enjoyment of Baki comes from two things really, the heart of the characters and the heart of the author. I really enjoyed this week's chapter based on just the first three pages alone for that second reason, but as for the first, I think I need to sit on this Hanayama storyline a bit longer and see if we're going anywhere else before I think about the meaning of it. Without that meaning available, face value is all there is to take right now, and because of that I can understand why people wouldn't be happy with the current state of the story. But, hey, at least people on here aren't freaking out as much as the YouTube comments on those shitty chapter summary videos. Yeah, there's that problem of wanting certain characters to interact despite knowing how many problems that will cause to what they've already established for years, this interaction is clearly one of those especially because we have to problem of Jack being one of those (neglected) characters that have always been working behind the scenes to develop while Hanayama is the total opposite.
It's reasonable for Jack to eat shit to some degree because he doesn't even know Hanayama at all, but you still end up having a hard time explaining why Hanayama just shrugs off things that not even Pickle could ignore and why Jack, who's also shown as a stoic character who can shrug off a lot of stuff suddenly reels and staggers from Hanayama's blow and tricks even if no sold much similar or worse things in the past and has grown much stronger to this day.

As I said, you just have to take things at face value because we're just seeing clashes of ideas and concepts rather than characters, but it's still hard to not call the bullshit when you see it and it's a shame because Itagaki is pretty good at framing fights from a different point of view, I guess some characters just shouldn't have match ups because they're not really compatible in the way Itagaki writes though as a reader it's hard to not want to see them clash for that very reason, it's a complex problem really, no matter who wins here I don't think there's a way to end this in a satisfying way unless it ends with Hanayama and Jack bonding over this and becoming pals regardless of how it ends.

No, he's got to go through the reality of what it means to humiliate himself and look uncool and understand that it won't always net him the win first. Just because you will humiliate yourself and abandon aesthetics doesn't mean you will always win as a result. This is an important loss for his character growth just the same as getting humbled by Koushou in spite of winning was. He won the fight but looked like shit when he cried out in pain for not understanding his own hypocrisy. Now he's being humiliated AND not winning. We're ultimately pushing toward the crux of Jack's current hypocrisy and denial being that he does, in fact, care what people think and he does desire praise and recognition, so looking bad and still losing probably isn't going to sit well with him. He was acting all high-minded with his dad but he was still getting drunk on the crowd's cheers when he was winning. This should come as a shock to him and ideally lead to him realizing that he does have an aesthetic sense.

Baki Dou 2014 was amazing. Itagaki explained to the reader how there was a difference between a fighter and a warrior, similar to how a sportsman and a fighter are different (which was the point of the Ali jr. arc), reason why Memetobe was a decent fighter and a fearsome warrior.
