>"if you kill 'em you'll be just like 'em" vs "they speak only to deceive"
This is why Frieren took its top spot on MAL. At first, I did not think much of this scene. However, look at FMA's you can't kill Envy" scene and Frieren's counterpart "Aura, kill yourself". When compared to each other, Frieren's is simply better on all aspects.
In FMA, the tired cliche is set up and executed. One might argue that there is a justification-it tries the 'justified cliche' angle-even then, that justification is extremely shoddy. Why even set up the cliche in the first place?
It cannot, however, compare to Frieren's scene. It's visceral. It speaks to the human heart.
They see evil, and steadfastly slay evil. It's the exact opposite. The cliche is not only avoided but rejected. A complete subversion.
The scene does, perhaps, say something about evil and the nature of it. And the human heart cannot lie. Maybe even a MAL rater comes to realize the transcendent truth behind it, and they cannot deny it. A scene that speaks to the hearts of human-and one that doesn't. The first place is easily hogged from its previous owner.
