I think fumifumi's reaction to this letter is rather hypocritical in contrast to his attitude towards Ayano. If he saw Hisui's letter in the same light he would treat it as just a kid taking a crush too seriously who just needs to have it explained to her that she's too young for him. But instead he seems to take her confession seriously and is concerned about the very real possible implications of it. The biggest hurdle would be Fumi's guilt. In general, Fumi's problem seems to be not taking Ayano seriously despite her in many ways being emotionally more mature than him (a fact of the situation that society doesn't allow you to acknowledge). But who knows, maybe with Ayano's skillful cornering and persistence Fumi will be conquered.
Also, in Fumi's past with Akari, she criticized him of just pitying her and called him selfish for that, he said "I just wanted to be someone's strength", which is a good excuse to be detached and hide his own feelings. So maybe the story is about changing that with Ayano.
