In some aspects Princession is doing fine, but they probably need those Takara Tomy toy sales to declare the project a commercial success. And I don't think they've got that.

Tomy really has it rough, but they love to try I'll give them that. Vague tangent but I've been watching Ryukendo, and the show is pretty fun (in spite of there being zero plot) but man these toys must have sold like crap, they look cool but they're also fucking giant so they'd have to be scaled down like crazy, and the keys themselves are just so dinky and lame I'm kind of surprised they ended up being the collectible.
Also watched Shinkalion: Change The World as my first foray into Shinkalion and that really seemed like they nailed the toys there, no idea how it sold but all the liners being able to combine and transform looked really cool. Seems like Princession might be falling into their boring camp though, microphones and baubles don't seem particularly fun.

I don't think it's that out of left field. You're right with the otaku references but it's not like any of them seem like something that would deter children, the core of the show remains girls singing and dancing and I don't feel like that's been sidelined at all for pandering to older audiences/otaku. Plus if (albeit, small) venues are being sold out for liveshows that probably means kids are enjoying the content at least. Unless those shows are being filled entirely with otaku I guess.

You know I wonder to what extent we'll see kodomo shows get into really dire straits like the west. It can't be that much longer before Japanese kids just prefer watching Youtube slop like the rest of the world does at this point. Could end up in a weird future where all these shows just get made purely for otaku while keeping up a veneer of being for kids.

Precure has always been a long commecial to sell dolls and accesories, but this season, even the eyecatch it's a commercial in itself, for the last 4-5 eps, they just show off this season's transformation trinket
