When I bought a high quality desk chair in Japan they had a sales ad video on loop explaining this phenomenon as well. They described Japanese farmers spending centuries bending over in rice fields while western farmers stood straight in wheat fields, so westerners needed different levels of back support than japanese. It's also telling that (like slavs, for some reason) Japanese can not only easily do the "deep squat" pose, but remain in that position indefinitely as a form of rest, whereas to most modern westerners it's extremely painful to even attempt, let alone rest in it. And then you've got beds vs hard futons on the floor, etc. Having slept and sat in everything on the planet there really are some deep differences to what Japanese can tolerate compared to hakujin.
