I'm currently watching the 2nd season. The other day this pigeon flew into my window and got stuck on my balcony. He was a bit dazed so I decided to just leave him be until he was ready to fly again.
I started watching an episode and as soon as I did he came right up to the window, found a position where he could see the screen and sat perfectly still watched a couple of episodes with me. He flew away the next day so I didn't get a chance to watch any more with him, but I like to think he enjoyed getting to see a little bit of the show. Dunno about a consensus, and I'm only on S2E20. But I don't like how the anime jumps around a lot/shuffled the manga chapters around (perhaps less of a problem if you didn't read the manga first), how it didn't adapt much of Aqua or only shows it (briefly) in flashbacks, and some of the original stuff they added to stretch chapters into entire episodes is kind of so-so.
Despite that, I think it's fantastic and I am having a great time.

Even in Japan, high school isn't or at least wasn't compulsory. Especially since it's only 3 years(most western countries I know of it's 4 or 5 years). So people who weren't planning on going to university wouldn't necessarily go to high school.
