Am I the only that likes that it was a relatively short ova? We could have had the world/characters fleshed out more with additional episodes. But the abruptness of the end we got has an almost bittersweet vibe.

When you think about it, Blue Submarine 6 is just a retelling of The Isle of Doctor Moreau but with a more positive message.
Verg is basically Hyena-Swine except a non-traitor.

Ozawa Satoru specifically requested they do something completely different instead of just adapting his work. He's a legendary mangaka who worked with Yokoyama Mitsuteru and famously Yokoyama also requested the same of God Mars (making an original plot different from the source) when TMS decided to adapt his Mars manga.

I think she was done with the war once she saw her sister/team mate get killed at the end of the first episode. Kind of mirrors what happened to hayami and katsuma.

The point of Mutio and Hayami wasn't a sexual relationship, the point was that they saw each other as people despite being "enemies".
The war was entirely manufactured by a man who hated humanity. Meanwhile the pieces he was playing with only wanted peace but saw no option but to fight.

It's very similar to Turn-A Gundam in that it shows how much harder choosing peace can be.
