Just came from rewatching it, and the only thing Asuka felt at Shinji was barely tolerance because he was a fellow EVA Pilot, and then sheer hatred because he was surpassing her in the sync tests and shit, to the point of running from Misato's house.

And don't think it was a one sided contempt. Shinji also hated her and made her had that suicidal mindset after being the one who lashed out at her saying Kaji is dead (in the chapter Kaworu appears).
Both hate each other because Shinji and Asuka are a reflect of their true selves they hate.

In Rebuild 2.0 when Shinji thought Asuka died he threw a temper tantrum, but when he thought Rei died he was willing to wipe out all of humanity with 3rd impact just to bring her back. That is the difference between liking someone and LOVING someone.

Yeah, meanwhile Hikaru and Minmay were basically Outsville since the moment she tells him to go to war. I was pretty sure the two of them were going to be endgame when the Zentradi captured them and Misa wanted to kiss him instead of Kakizaki. Meanwhile, Minmays' idea of romance was a final embrace before blowing themselves out of an airlock. That episode of them trapped in the lower decks of the ship got dark.

They still made out over the apocalypse though. Oh, and let's not forget when she shacked up with him in Macross city when she had her superstar meltdown.
