That magical girl and evil lieutenant show was adapted years after the author died (but apparently it was in planning before her passing and the anime staff decided to see it through in her honor).
The Mayoi Neko Overrun author still got 2 adaptations after his death.
I think it's just a matter of:
1) some authors being bachelors whose parents (or whatever relatives they had) didn't care much for their career (so they don't bother to greenlight any further projects)
or 2) their family's way of dealing with their loss is to leave the author's works to be forgotten so that they can't be reminded of the pain.
Whatever the case, I doubt Japanese companies are the ones hesitant to make bank with brainchildren of dead people.
