The series tries to make it clear that he's not really "good" at cooking. He constantly has little accidents while working, his dishes taste decent but not excellent, he has to practice a lot more than average for every new dish he learns, and so on. I think they're going to go into that a little in the next episode, actually.
Admittedly, some of his dishes are complex enough to be slightly at odds with that premise, but I think you can mostly look past that.
