Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the thirty-third volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>281871557

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

Original title is ใ“ใฃใใ‚Šใ•ใ‚“. This is left untranslated and will be explained in the manga.

Well, here's the explanation as promised. Obviously, the original manga panel did not refer to Ouija (which is apparently trademarked) but covered what it is. Furinkan also has a note regarding it: "Kokkuri-san (ใ‚ณใƒƒใ‚ฏใƒชใ•ใ‚“) is a Japanese styled version of the European/American concept of "table-turning" which eventually evolved into Ouija, a method of using an object that moves around a board to spell messages supposedly from the afterlife. The Japanese tradition was introduced via an American sailor in the 1880s and rather than a ghostly presence the Japanese believe it is the spirit of a fox (ใใคใญ/kitsune) that communicates with them players of the game. Jiro Tsunoda's 1973 manga Ushiro no Hyakutaro (ใ†ใ—ใ‚ใฎ็™พๅคช้ƒŽ) also popularized the game."

I found Wikipedia's note regarding the name interesting enough to post as well: "The name kokkuri is an onomatopoeia meaning "to nod up and down", and refers to the movement of the actual kokkuri mechanism. The kanji used to write the word is an ateji, although its characters reflect the popular belief that the movement of the mechanism is caused by supernatural agents (ko ็‹, kitsune; ku ็‹—, dog/tengu; ri ็‹ธ, tanuki)."

Spooky. The No and Yes were redrawn for whatever reason. I googled and it does seem like this depiction of it is pretty standard, including the torii (shrine gate) in the middle.

In an interview in 2018 about Rin-ne, Rumiko Takahashi went over a lot of the characters. In regards to Rinne's mom, she said the following:

"The background for this character also was difficult to figure out, and I couldnโ€™t show her for some time. I was thinking about a lot of optionsโ€“ a human, a shinigami, even an angel... but at the end I realized: โ€œThatโ€™s right, this is a story about reincarnation!โ€ And I created the idea."

Mistranslation here. I guess the person translating this one didn't do the previous volume or just screwed up. Rinne said "ๅๆ•ฐๅนด้–“" which means "more than a decade", which is true. But decadeS is inaccurate as it has not been twenty years (since Rinne is not more than twenty years old).

End of chapter. Tsubasa's line seems accurate enough as he said ๆฏไธŠใ‚‚็›ธๅฝ“ใชใ‚ขใƒฌใ ใชใ€‚ which means "The mother is that kind of thing." or something. ใ‚ขใƒฌใ ใช being an incredibly vague turn of phrase. Sakura said "้Žไฟ่ญทใ‹ใ‚‚" or "Overprotective, maybe". ้Žไฟ่ญท appears to also mean "excessive care", so yeah, helicopter parent is appropriate. Honestly, probably didn't need to note this, but I was curious.
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.281983340 >>281983359 >>281984596
The book was not redrawn here or for the volume cover.

Furinkan notes that: "Kyokai no RINNE did not run in Shonen Sunday 2016 vol. 17 the following week." so that's why the date is going to skip.

The Japanese term for pop quiz does use a loan word, but only for the word test. ๆŠœใๆ‰“ใกใƒ†ใ‚นใƒˆ (nukiuchi tesuto). It means surprise test. May as well post more notes from the 2018 interview while I still remember to. Here is what Rumiko said regarding Renge:

"At first, she appeared as an enemy. However, I realized that Renge had a very serious approach, and that she was eager to cooperate at any time. She didnโ€™t necessarily like doing bad deeds. I consider her the type of person who's able to bring out the best from the worst circumstances. Alternatively, I think she has a very strong ethics."

So, if you ever wonder why it is that Renge hasn't seemed to try to kill anyone since her first appearance, it seems like that was her trying her best to be a proper damashigami. I imagine she has lost some interest in that given how Sabato pays her.

Tamako wanted Rinne to live with her in the afterlife, but Rinne didn't want to. I had to double check why since I genuinely didn't really remember. It is because Rinne considers himself "a human being. ... sort of...". This stuff is covered in the initial setup chapters in Volume 1. Though we do find out later that Sabato is a big reason behind all the money struggles.

I just realized you asked why Renge keeps going. I uh, have no idea. I guess because she started and she's a serious person.

Sakura seems to refer to Rokumon as "ใฎใ‚ใ‹ใ‚‹็Œซ" or "a cat who understands" which I guess is covered by talking cat, but technically is more specific. Also, Rinne's line was "่งฆใ‚Œๅˆใฃใฆใใ ใ•ใ„" which appears to mean "Touch each other, please". I can see why VIZ made it something more natural sounding in English. I know I look up a lot of these things, but I will say I do not prefer very literal and stilted translation despite how it seems at times.

This tool is called ้œŠใ„ใถใ‚Šๅ‡บใ—้ฆ™ (rei iburi-dashi ka). Spiritual incense or Spirit Drawing Incense. I was trying to find the name of this, but the last couple of times, I feel they didn't even say it. This one comes up a lot. Anyway, speaking of shinigami tools, here's a bit from that same 2018 interview about them:

"[Q:] The battles between the spirits had a routine quality to them which made them fun to read. For example, there was the attack that consisted of hitting someone with the corner of a Bible. But, you could also convince a spirit with a monologue, or you could buy a color balloon tool that could be smashed against them to reveal their forms to the living. There was also the description of regular maintenance for scythes and the revolving lanterns which made us feel that it was our own ordinary life being projected like a film. Battles without magic or special techniques were also used and they were more solid and more easily connected by humor. Was there anything in particular that you realized about the battles? Also, were there any special tools you liked?
Takahashi: Well, considering how you can only use the scythe for slicing, it wouldโ€™ve been a pity if there werenโ€™t any other tools. I had a lot of fun thinking about the goods for each chapter. My favorite was the โ€œTsukumogami Sealโ€. Apart from that, I think I used a lot of channeling dolls, but I had second thoughts about them. I realized that if I used them too often, the chapter would end too quickly, so I set a really high value for them."

The terms used here are ๅฎˆ่ญท้ˆ (shugo rei) or guardian spirit (often localized to guardian angel since that is a familiar term in English) and ่ƒŒๅพŒ้ˆ (haigo rei). ่ƒŒๅพŒ้ˆ literally means "behind spirit" and refers to a spirit that follows someone. VIZ went with lingering spirit, which is a pragmatic translation since it does have a somewhat negative connotation without being as dramatic as "stalking spirit" or similar.

The concept of these ่ƒŒๅพŒ้ˆ seem to be pretty common in manga with a lot of character's aches and pains being attributed to them in supernatural stories. I don't think it is that common an idea in Western works, but I'm not exactly an expert.

Admittedly, all this with chili basedbean paste would probably be insane even for me. This paste is called ่ฑ†ๆฟ้†คใช in Japanese and is apparently called Doubanjiang in English, a loanword from Chinese. It is a Sichuan cuisine thing. It is great!

And yes, the original caption referred to the Grim Reaper as shinigami. I think given that VIZ kept the term shinigami in this series and it is pretty obvious in English, they should've kept it shinigami in this caption.

Sakura Mamiya used the normal term localized as wandering spirit here, ie. ๆตฎ้Š้œŠ (floating spirit). The tool here is ใƒŽใ‚คใ‚บๆŠฝๅ‡บใ‚ฝใƒ•ใƒˆ (noizu chลซshutsu sofuto). ใƒŽใ‚คใ‚บ being localized as interference this time rather than interference vibration is obviously a loanword from the English word "noise", but refers specifically to white noise or static. ใ‚ฝใƒ•ใƒˆ is also a loanword from the English word soft, but refers to software. But yeah, noise extraction software or interference extracting software are both fine translations. Noise is a bit less clear so I get why they did this.

Also, the original text said "PC" in English, so I would hope it didn't refer to transferring it into a monitor specifically.

I thought maybe VIZ mistranslated, but I looked ahead and the coin actually only says ๅƒไธก on it, so Furinkan messed up. A maneki-neko (beckoning cat or lucky cat) usually holds a koban that says ๅƒไธ‡ไธก on it, so I assume that's why Furinkan messed up.

If you google Kanedma or ้‡‘้œŠ, you get an illustration that very much resembles this last panel here (presumably also being referenced by the cover of this chapter). It is the depiction of the kanedama from ไปŠๆ˜”็”ปๅ›ณ็ถš็™พ้ฌผ (Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki) a compendium of various Japanese creatures including yokai, oni, ghosts, etc. published in 1779. "I created Tsubasa to be a rival for Rinne. However, Rinne and Sakura were a hero and heroine who don't get waver easily. Rinne, of course, was somewhat troubled by Tsubasa's existence.
Tsubasa has a hard time with things and tends to find faults. Overall though he is a strong and positive boy."

She also said this regarding him in the 2018 interview:

"At the beginning, Tsubasa was meant to fill the position of Rinneโ€™s rival. While drawing him, I thought he was a positive guy. So, even when I drew chapters where he suffered, I was aware that heโ€™d always react optimistically."

I've mentioned this before, but Furinkan has a fairly comprehensive note so here you go:

"Kurosu calls Shoma "bocchama" (ใผใฃใกใ‚ƒใพ) which means "little sir" or "little master". It is the way a servant would refer to their master's very young child as opposed to "wakasama" (่‹ฅๆง˜) or "wakadanna" (่‹ฅๆ—ฆ้‚ฃ)."

In the 2018 interview, Rumiko says the following about Shoma:

"I had the idea of introducing a shinigami kid to the story. While drawing him, I realized that Shoma didnโ€™t enjoy fighting against big enemies which involved too much effort to purify. So after that moment, it became easier to draw him. Also, drawing kids as shinigami was fun, too."

Assuming this wasn't mistranslated, I guess you can interpret it as "he doesn't enjoy it, but he does it anyway".

In regards to Tamako, Rumiko Takahashi had this to say in that 2018 interview:

"Being in a guardian-like position for Rinne, I thought sheโ€™d be able to help with this or that."

Uh, that's all. But she did also talk about her on Twitter on January 29th, 2022 where she said:

"She has the role of the storyteller. I personally like her a lot. She is someone that doesn't worry about the little things. Only someone like Tamako could deal with a son like Sabato. However there may have been times when even she wanted to kick him up to the Wheel of Reincarnation and have him pass on. I was really happy with Satsuki Yukino's performance.

The attack is called ๆ‚ช้ญ”ใฎ่ฝใจใ—็‰ฉ (akuma no otoshimono) in Japanese. ่ฝใจใ—็‰ฉ does seem to mean lost items (more specifically dropped items?), but Google Translate suggested "Devil's Drop" as a translation which does seem fitting.
