It only needs Japan to make its money back. Plus people will go watch it, it's still pretty prominent. Went to a local con the other day and I could see character pins and cosplay everywhere.

Not even the Covid boost or the fact ufotable is in charge of the animation could explain it's explosive popularity and staying power.

Kimetsu no Yaiba fans, naturally. This isn't a film made for a casual audience (in Japan it is though) like Mugen Train was and it's also quite long, being almost 3 hours. In America, anime movies are infamously frontloaded, making all of their money in opening weekend and then that's it.

KnY is the My Little Pony of shounen. Ufotable found the visual formula to entire the kids — and I’m not hating on that fact. If we consider the modern big 3 shounens that just ended (KnY, JJK and MHA), then KnY is the worst-written o them. I don’t say this lightly. For years I thought MHA edged out the win for worst-written trash with JJK trying hard to catch up in its final arc and dunking on the failed ending. But once I seriously consider the plot and fights of KnY does it become clear how singularity irredeemable most of it is. It’s as if the mangaka was trying to ape the vibe and story beats of a shounen but didn’t know how to actually make one.
