I mean, if we go by real life, chanting is just self hypnotisation so you accurately replicate both mental and physical motions to arrive at the desired spell. It's like some kids song that helps learning, except a bit higher level. Most people probably cant conceptualize spells, imagine addition or multiplication, you can tell something simple like 5x+25=50 at a glance, but for more complex stuff you would need to solve it. I imagine the powers also rather have mages strictly adhere to rules rather than experiment.
