Why did Dragon Ball get a free pass for randomly introducing aliens if the concept is so universally hated

Because in 1988 people weren't autistic about plot twists, exposition dumps, and a thousand other basic writing techniques that make stories enjoyable.

Dragon Ball was a Journey to the West adaptaiton with a whacky world with no clear worldbuilding. You had a guy with a monkey tail, talking animals, dinosaurs, shapeshifting cats, cyborgs... So aliens weren't out of place in such world. Is not like Naruto who was set in a strictly ninja based universe and devolved into aliens being the cause of the magic of the world, it was a situation where stuff like that could be added and not feel out of place.

Dragonball was already knee deep into scifi elements so aliens weren't that much of a stretch. Also, the aliens weren't protrayed as "the people behind everything". They even went to an earth-centric plotline afterwards, with even more scifi.

Dragon Ball wasn't really that grounded even in its own reality to begin with and I mean (at the time) if the audience was totally cool with demons, aliens isn't that far ahead. Dragon Ball also had a sci-fi element to it already even if it was understated. Most of these shounen that bring aliens in tend to not have that.

Because aliens are introduced in those series without any regard to the tonal whiplash and setting. The OG cast of Dragonball is a kid that can transform into King Kong from seeing the moon, a genius girl that can make a shrink ray and a radar for things that can grant any wish without any drawbacks, a shape shifting pig, a floating cat that can also shapeshift, a triclops, a near immortal old man and his fortuneteller sister, and a energy beam that can blow up the moon. Also one of the very first villains looks like an alien. It’s not out of place and the stuff that occurs in dragonball is odd enough that the existence of aliens doesn’t really feel contrived. Also the main reason is that people started with Z.

The "nerd" reason is because Dragon Ball's world already had sci-fi stuff (capsules, flying cars, etc.) in addition to other wacky stuff (e.g., talking animals, kid with a tail, etc.), so aliens' existence was plausible.
The real reason is that Dragon Ball is good.

Freeza was the peak of the franchise. At least the following arcs gave us some cool character designs.
