Haibane renmai is an exceedingly well made anime with excellent art and design on top of a wonderful story that balances the line between being melencholic and hopeful. The dark turn of the tone in the second half is very well executed and it makes the comfiness of the whole feel more valuable. It's a story about personal, spiritual growth and self-forgiveness, with an ultimately a hopeful theme and message
