It had a great premise, there are tons of jokes you could do with a deer girl, plus it got hyped by memes before it started airing. But then it was just unfunny, none of the jokes even had to do with her being a deer

I was out taking a walk om a family members property one crisp morning, when I came across a young, slender doe at the edge of the woods.
I smiled and said aloud to myself, "hehe shikanoko deer anime, am I right bros?".
And at that moment I knew how much of an impact the show had on our shared consciousness.
In time, we will come to appreciate it, not just for being a forgotten flavor of the month, but for being an important touchstone of our cultural heritage.

Thats because deer were treated with dignity in the anime. The cut to commercials always had a real life deer reservation featured. It wasnt a perfect anime but it had many touching moments, it was a real comfy watch.
