I love the shit out of Belle; only anime movie I went out of my way to buy the collectors edition BD; and i absolutely want to collect every dub of it out there just to hear those amazing fucking songs in every language they were recorded in. And call me closed minded; but I really wanted Hosoda to expand on the world of U; because it is just so fascinating to me. So when I heard the first news about Scarlet; that it was going to be something different, I was just the tiniest bit bummed out.

MC got stuck in life because he didnt let go that first love feeling, so stuck that he was not happy and was living a shitty life. at the end when he saw his first love, now married, then it drops on him like a ton of bricks, others had moved on while he was still almost frozen by his self imposed misery. So, by not talking to her, he effectively break the cycle and move on.

There is no real substance to Our War Game. What drives the plot, if you can even call it that, is the characters being unable to contact each other and immediately solve the problem because of a various set of random misfortunes, so everything is stalled and the villain is free to do its thing as one botched phone call after another fills up the runtime. What made it good was the direction and animation, but that's obviously outclassed by an actual cinematic release. Only people who grew up with Digimon and can't be objective about its quality would ever claim that OWG is better, and can't even articulate why.

If you want actual serious cinema then the fimography of Akira Kurosawa is a must.

None of those films has an unwarranted, dramatic tone shift in the last act. Wolf Children opens with tragedy and has plenty of hard times throughout, and the character progression of the kids as they reach adolescence is done gradually to build up their eventual decisions. In The Girl Who Lept Through Time the fun times end halfway through as the guy keeps trying to confess and things escalate from that. Mirai is consistent in his not too serious tone, it has heavy themes in all its segments but they're filtered through the eyes of a child so they're all treated pretty lightly. I haven't seen Belle so I can't say.
