There have been a few good dubs, but usually the original Japanese VAs are so much better. Not because I want to read, but because they actually care about the performance and do their fucking jobs most of the time. English dubs are usually phoned in by people who don't give a fuck, and it shows. Over in Japan voice acting is actually a real discipline that requires a lot of work just to get your first gig. It's not just reading some script shat out by Google Translate.
Maybe someday AI will get good enough that it can pick up on all the subtle nuance of the Japanese performances, and generate emotional cues for another AI voice gen to make similar performances for foreign language scripts. Because I've just about given up on hoping anyone will give a shit and do a proper dub with real humans. All the best dubs were older stuff before companies realized they could actually make money doing the bare minimum effort dubbing a thousand shit-tier anime every year.
Not saying the subs are even that great, either. But no matter how bad they are at least I can hear what the actors are saying, and I've learned enough about Japanese grammar and shit that I can sorta figure out what's happening even with the shittiest sub.
