Because Kazuki Akane an extremely intelligent person and genius director. He writes smart characters that actually have the spark of life in them, who behave like there is a person inside them figuring out the best thing to do, like you or I would in their shoes, rather than just being shitty tropes or doing retarded things just to serve the plot.

You know, now I'm curious... what was the last anime original that got 26 or more episodes from the get go? Most anime originals are only given 1 cour to work with, and they MIGHT get a second season later but thats not the same thing as knowing you have those episodes to work with from the start. You don't write or pace things at all the same way between knowing you have 26 episodes and HOPING you have 26 episodes.

The last 2-cour anime original I can remember was Franxx. There must have been one since then, but nothing comes to mind for me.

Watched this recently and while I did enjoy it, I thought the love triangle fell kind of flat which led to my disappointment with the ending. Allen got way too much focus and had too many plot threads tied to him so when Hitomi realized her feelings for Van by the end it felt shoehorned in. Her and Van had fewer sincere moments together so their romance wasn't satisfying.

NTA, but the first 25 eps of rayearth was explicitly about the girls character growth and you basically did nothing but watch them endure and overcome trials to strengthen there resolve, with Escaflowne Hitomi is just constantly pulled along for the ride, and barely has any reason to be there except be a future telling damsel for the most part.

In a thread a few months ago an other anon pointed that out as a urban legend. Only very early drafts had over 30 episodes planned. Yet after rewatching it recently I got the same feeling too. The individual episodes are wonderful, but it somewhat feels a bit too jumpy overall. So often there's just like a 'conflict' of the week, that gets resolved until the next 'conflict' emerges the next episode. This is all saved by the overarching narrative and the good character writing (Hitomi being the best even. 10/10 likeable), but it's uncanny how close the surface formula is to something like Sailor Moon.

Also I felt like this 20 years ago, but rekindled with the thought, that I actually like the movie more than the series. Depressed Hitomi is 11/10 waifu material. The ending also felt more satisfying there. In the series it was a real downer for her to leave Gaia.

Maybe I phrased it badly: It's (apparantly; not like I was there) an urban legend that there were production troubles leading to these troubles and the episode count being slashed.

All the points you've raised are still VERY valid. Though I just think that the "normal" kind of bad decision-making lead to it. It's so frustration (warning food analogy incoming) to see all ingredients thoughtfully chosen and placed, just slightly carelessy prepared.

I think I read there was a misconception. there was always going to be 24 (or 26, I forget) episodes. they didn't "run out" like Evangelion did for their last 2 episodes. this was their budget and constrain and they used their budget accordingly and correctly.
their script and vision was, however, too big for that given amount of episodes, and that explains why all the plot holes are there.

that's me paraphrasing a reddit post which was remembering an obscure interview translated from japanese, so there has probably been some facts lost along the way though.
Anonymous No.282081743

Might have been like that. I mean in the end the specific circumstances don't matter, since we both reach the same conclusion. A few more episodes giving the plot some breathing room would have perfected the series. It's still a masterwork, but it could have been an once a decade legend.

I wouldn't say perfect.
I mean, it's isekai to begin with so it started with a handicap and the inability to ever be perfect.
There's also how they planned for more episodes and only got the budget for 26, so they fused characters, yes, those 2 characters.
The setting and characters were engaging enough that you wouldn't really care if the story had a plot, but it certainly could have had something more grounded, not necessarily more serious because it's already fucking serious when your FMC have a heart attack and reach the frontier of death.
But something more consistent.

Just the marketing impact would be disastrous so there's probably a line in their contract about "never criticizing the show"

If I could somehow rewrite Escaflowne to make it more consistent, I would have them be the one behind the "isekai", using their own Fate-prediction-machine from outside the world so as to not have closed-loop interference.
Their mission would be to ensure Gaea never do the mistake of the Draconians,
So they pick random people they calculated would result in that.
And the trouble with Durnkirk would be that they accidentally created condition in which beyond Newton smart he deduce the existence of the machine and decide to use it

>They lack the concept of time
>They ask for huge sums of money
It would be really funny if the reason for why it costs so much was because they were from the future. Imagine if they were only asking for the standard repair cost of their time, but forgot to take into account the inflation between the present and their future time.

It IS an adaptation, but the anime was basically made at the same time as TWO distinct manga.
And oh boy it is different.
Hitomi is invoked by fusing her into a crystal, which make her the literal power source of Escaflowne (no fate in this) and sometime even have her arm sprout magic energy.
If you thought Van was childish in the anime, there he is smaller than Hitomi, swear all the time and it absolutely arrogant.
Oh and Balgus has a daughter who is the sexy kind of warrioress.

I would also worship anyone who make me a mecha pilot, even if he burn to the ground some random kingdom
(our Emperor Dornkirk know what he is doing)

Speaking of the emperor, his introduction through this communicator is gorgeous.
You can contest his methods but the goal was worth it and he did, in fact, made a "starving kingdom" into a technomagic Empire of the highest order.
I would totally understand why he is venerated.

My original question is what kind of mecha (not shows, the robots) do girls like? Do they actually like that show for the mecha?

Last one:
If your Mecha don't have its own throne in front of your banquet, you ain't paying it proper respect. I bet your mech don't even have its own choir chanting its name.
