Sasuke and Naruto having dreams from the memories of Indra and Ashura so they know they have a unique connection and a mystery of that weirdness to unravel together.
Sasuke would hope these would help him intuit a path to greater power and Naruto that it would help him be acknowledged. But then realizing that as chakra transmigrants that they have only been left unresolved conflict.

Most people can’t read, can’t draw, or come up with good ideas at all. They would especially fail if they had to do all that and more on a limited schedule. The only thing that would really assist your point is an extra arc before the chunin exams or the Sasuke retrieval arc to have more focus on their relationship. Honestly, their relationship makes more sense than Deku and Bakugou.
It’s funny that despite Kishi writing them as a potential fag tier friendship, he can draw sexy women and make a few of them competent despite his alleged misogyny.

The idea of a brother figure is used multiple times as the mental model for how Naruto characterizes his friendship with Sasuke, he imagines that it's what it's like to have a brother. This should be examined for the delusion it is.
Sasuke is now instead open and up front about all of the shit with Itachi from the get go. He is not cagey about the info, and in fact probably uses every chance he gets to claim he's going to get revenge for his clan and kill his brother.
Naruto now understands Sasuke's situation earlier, and they can speed run to actually having a friendship before the Sasuke retrieval arc happens.

Really hammer home the idea of Naruto seeing Team 7 as a family.
Naruto never had a family (in memory), so he thinks of Sasuke like the brother he never had.
Sasuke, who did have a family including a brother, and he does not see Naruto that way.
I think that's probably how Kishimoto intended it to be read, but I don't think he made it clear enough considering how many people genuinely believe Naruto and Sasuke are gay.

Seriously though, nothing can be changed about part 1 to make Naruto's obsession with Sasuke in part 2 believable. He's just so stupidly naive and all the gayness really makes it worse. All of that needs to be toned down in Shippuden to not be shit. There's a limit to how believable "aw I wanna save my friend" can be when said friend keeps trying to kill you and people you're close to.

I started with Shippuden during Pain Arc and haven't watched part 1 until a year ago.
Somehow kid Naruto seems more reasonable and mature compared to his older self
