If they just wanted money they would have left things as they were and just make shitton of merchandising but Mine wanted to recover the IP he abandoned, rewrite it to his likeness and erase the show that got the IP popular because he wasn't involved in it. What killed KF was Mine's retarded rewriting and nothing else.

Basically, Mine Yoshizaki created the Kemono Firends concept and launched a phone game based on it
The game was a huge failure
A tie-in anime was already planned but as the game was such a big failure Mine abandoned the IP
Kadokawa hired some literally who(Tatsuki) on peanuts to make the cheapest anime possible just to cover the airing slot
Tatsuki with a team of like 5 people had complete creative freedom as neither Mine not Kadokawa cared anymore
Game servers got shut down
A few days later the anime started airing past midnight
It was the cheapest thing you would ever see BUT it was so charming and fun Otaku instantly loved it
By the season final it was HUGE among Otaku
Otaku were demanding for merchandising but game was already dead and no merchandising was prepared at all
The broadcaster realized it was a fun wholesome show
Got rerun on an early morning timeslot
It became HUGE among kids
It was HUGE at comiket getting close to surpass even 2hou (insane as a new IP)
The friends started appearing everywhere on ads for big corporations
Merchandising got released, Kadokawa was swimming in money
Tatsuki (the new director) got in touch with the fans and promised them big thing for the future
Season 2 announced, hype was in the stratosphere
Then Mine returned... he wanted HIS IP back
Mine got added to season 2 production team
Tatsuki got fired short after
According to Kadokawa he did unauthorized use of the IP
He did some spot for some brand, the brand shown later they actually had a contract with Kadokawa so it was bullshit
People became MAD at Tatsuki getting fired
Both Kadokawa and Mine radio silent
Otaku started abandoning the IP because of Tatsuki being fired
Mine's "second season" started airing
It was a soft-reboot, season 1 cliffhanger ending got ignored
Writing was shit
It shitted on season 1 at every chance it had
People hated it
Franchise plummeted in popularity
It's a rotten corpse by now

I don't get this obsession with Mine. We had a Tv Tokyo producer openly disparaging Tatsuki, so acting like everything could have come from just Mine is silly.

Mine just usually gives creative freedom to people working alongside him. Just check the Arcade Gamer Fubuki or Sgt.Frog animes and compare to the manga (also the Sgt.Frog and Fubuki characters in Seven of Seven).

Note Mine wrote the initial script of the first episode and was the one who established the core Kaban/Serval cast (removing Mirai who was initially meant to be a recurring character in the anime too). Tatsuki did rewrite many lines there, but it was still just rewording/changing them, rather than scrapping it over and starting from zero.

Mine also was doing those guidebooks during season 1.

I won't deny something might have soured later on considering the radio silence from him after this situation started. But this image that Mine had completely abandoned Kemono Friends and suddenly jumped in when it was a success is a complete lie. He was constantly posting Kemono Friends art too on twitter back in those days.

The stuff surrounding this series is pretty interesting. Has the guy that was in charge of the first season done anything since? Even with all the controversy surely someone would want to hire someone that made something super popular with basically no money.

I need to rewatch this series though. I remember it being fine, though not anything too good. I imagine watching it as it aired would have been fun though.

He did Kemurikusa, which I would argue might be better than Kemono Friends. Hits many of the same beats, but with a darker tone. He also did a short series called Hentatsu that's supposed to be getting a movie, though I kind of doubt it's going to come out at this point. Hentatsu isn't great, but it did introduce me to the obscure genre CGI anime with ad-libbed voice acting.

I won't say there is no way a single guy can't hold all the strings well when it comes to creating something, but it's more often that a good show is the result of a lot of people putting in their own piece of effort to create something really good.
