Sure, there are some subtle changes but I suspect the impression the artstyle changed are mostly due to the much less subtle difference in the MD scans. No idea what exactly those are based on, but from volume 4 onwards the MD scans also look a lot more like the other scans I can find and like my physical volumes (picrel bottom, also what you posted), but for the first 3 they look completely different (picrel top).

To be fair volume 1 is the most extreme example as the background is almost completely white on MD, in volume 2 thats not the case anymore but even there the dark tones are much more pronounced and everything has a lot more contrast than in other scans/physical.

As far as we can tell, the only reason he came up in the first place was specifically to find Riko (whether to get her to come down or stay away, who knows), and on the way up he even promised Faputa to come back for her. So even if he somehow goes up and doesn't find Riko/Riko leaves on her own/he decides he doesn't care, he would likely return to Faputa.
