I expect Capella's return to the story to be excellent. I personally don't mind all the fighting in Arcs 8/9, but I think Capella is the perfect villain to bring back the mystery and thriller vibes that arcs 2/4/6 have without going fucking insane in scale like Arcs 8/9.

I guess the volume really is over. What a weird place to just stop. I assume there will be some little LN only thing that's the actual ending and involve Rem and Emilia getting sucked up Al's asshole too or something people would actually be surprised by or care about.

When he turned down Rem I genuinely felt like this was an extremely out of character plot contrivance that ruined the series, because she just made so much sense for him while Emilia is just... there I guess.
It wouldn't bother me in another story but this was a moment that effected the entire direction of the plot and character motivations and everything. It just doesn't make any sense, the only reasonable explanation is Subaru is supposed to be mentally ill specifically in a way that makes him incapable of loving a different girl, which is not properly written into the story beforehand.

Theory that probably has at least a little validity:
She looks exactly like Satella and there's some magic compulsion he has to love Satella possibly due to some soul fuckery we don't know about. Physically, Emilia is pretty much all his fetishes and top interests in a single person and this is likely to not be random chance. Satella and Emilia also happen to look the same for unknown reasons so the same logic also applies to Satella and Satella is more likely the reason for it.

Now, for in-story reasons:
He came over with a dumb set of expectations, that he was owed a bitch because he's the isekai hero. He was a little more honest about this as a motivation for following her around initially, but its also that he's scared shitless. He didn't want to stop and think about really, truly being alone in this world and somewhat clinged to the first person who didn't just brush him off. Because Subaru is also a stubborn jackass, instead of facing his totally wrongheaded thinking and giving up, he instead copes and comes up with new reasons why he should actually keep trying when his previous reasoning is proven to be full of shit or retarded. Basically he "loves" Emilia because he said he did initially and made a big scene about it and now can't ever go back on that so he keeps coping up new ways about how he loves her when things go wrong. This is somewhat plausible on its own, but it might also be combined with the above theory so that he's more compelled to do it than not but doesn't recognize this.

He literally loves Rem and outright says so many times. Even in that scene him telling her he loves Emilia is him responding that he is listening to her and not giving up. Essentially that he is back to normal. Then he is very quickly given the idea that maybe he doesn't have to choose between them and that's where he's been for the entire rest of the series. Its just no progress could be made for very obvious reasons.

Given all the other characters he writes and says he likes they're all complex and have a lot of moving parts while Emilia, his supposed favorite, he just keeps writing dumber and dumber every arc. She'll catch strays about being dumb in chapters she's not even in. It just feels like a giant humiliation ritual he's using to see who gets tricked by it. Maybe she's just bait to get the plebs away from his real waifu, Satella. Like Emilia is so unimportant he didn't even name her, she just has a random name cooked up by his friend like most of the other candidates. I don't remember it well enough to confidently say you're right or wrong, but I really don't think him turning down Rem made any sense at all. He should have still tried to save everyone, that's where the plot was going obviously, but the character didn't make any sense to me when he didn't turn to Rem and decide he was going to marry her. So much of the character development and their dynamic and everything made so much sense.

He didn't turn her down, she turned him down.
He asks her to run away with him and abandon everything, she says no. She goes on a big speech about how if they did that she knows he really doesn't want to and the person she fell in love with would be left behind. They go back and forth about whether he's worth shit or not, she convinces him that he is, at least to her, and she confesses and says she wants to see him be cool. He tells her he still loves Emilia, which indicates he's back like she wanted and that he's going to show her him being cool like she wanted. It takes like two days before she gets an actual direct answer out of him that he loves her and doesn't want to be without her. She gave him a coward's way out that he doesn't actually have to chose between them because its perfectly acceptable for him to have both.

Rem is incredibly locked down and has been since arc 3. Betty, while not in the same bowl, is also locked down as of arc 4.

He 100% has some kind of contract with Satella that he isn't aware of, its bound to his soul, and if he sees Satella directly his boner assumes direct control and makes him do and say things his conscious mind is trying to say the opposite of. So there is absolutely something fucked in his head in regards to her, the only real speculation is exactly what and how much does it actually influence him.

Its worth noting that the follow up scenes before and after the whale fight are changed in the anime because the director didn't want to "confuse" the audience that he loves Rem since S1 was supposed to be it for the anime and no more was supposed to be made. Which is also why they didn't properly adapt the ending to reveal that Rem got turned into a potato. So then S2 has the awkward transition where out of nowhere Subaru is talking about how Rem is as important to him as Emilia to Emilia's face and that he loves Rem and Carmilla appears as Rem and such.

A lot of random animeonlies were super confused because all they took from the meme scene is Subaru saying he loved Emilia and they forgot everything else that happened. Doesn't help because of the large gap between the seasons so people that didn't keep up with the series forget details. When I first watched it as an animeonly I still took the replacement scene with him and Rem after the whale fight as romantic because even though its not technically explicit and its softened compared to the novel version, compared to your average anime "romance" they might as well have fucked. But a lot of other people forgot, didn't pay attention in the first place, or got gaslit by years of meme spam.
