Almost all of Japan's cultural memory of SEGA is the Saturn and the Arcade. The Dreamcast is an also ran. Mega Drive doesn't even rate.

I was a Sonic kid and watched the movies for the sake of nostalgia and they are really good. The staff has shown a lot of love for the franchise. They do hold up fine for non-fans and are still good movies, but I wouldn't watch it if I didn't get the references and love given to the fans. However I think it's impossible for the sales to purely be nostalgia driven.

The recent games (Frontiers and Shadow Generations) sold pretty well in Japan. Sonic is also getting collabs with Vtubers and Vocaloid producers now, so it's not like he's unrecognizable there. In recent years he's become a bit more popular.
Japs just prefer other Sega franchises like Puyo Puyo and Yakuza.
