Ideon is good, but you have to already like older style mecha anime to get into it. You have to be the kind of guy that can chew on Robot Romance and J9, because it is a lot of episodic fighting.
There is a weird pride people have around having seen Ideon for whatever reason when it's a normalfag show in Japan. It's not "deep" mecha or anything, and it's hardly a Dezaki work in terms of normalfag older anime. Still great to be sure, but I think it's just a persecution complex that a lot of newfags have when they start watching older anime, where they want to feel like the outsider discovering something.

You saw it with the one video that got spammed around a lot where some kids watched the first episode of some anime, and one of the ones they hated was Ideon, and like, what the fuck do you expect? It's very antiquated in its style, imagine if you sat down one day and decided to watch whatever TCM was playing on TV that day and you hadn't seen a movie made before the year 2000.

tl;dr it's good, you just need the right mindset for anime like this.

Most people don't pretend to like something.
I watched it and loved it.
I wouldn't recommend it to somebody who watches trending seasonal stuff.

I wouldn't say tens of millions, but I would not be surprised if a significant number of people have seen Ideon in some capacity, it's not exactly an unknown show. Compared to like, Evangelion and Dragon Ball, sure, it is, but if we were to tier off older mecha anime (pre-00s) in the west, Ideon wouldn't be far from the top.
It's just people wanting to feel like they're part of the in group.

People only bring it up when they want to put down Anno and Evangelion because they've heard Eva ripped off Ideon. With that said, the tv series of Ideon is an absolute slog of a snorefest but the sequel movie is one of the top 10 best anime movies and retroactively makes the whole thing worth it.

Looked into a tiny bit and here's some normalfag stats from the two big normalfag logging sites.
>MyAnimeList
It is the #2 most popular anime of the year, behind Ashita no Joe 2, the most important and revered work in Osamu Dezaki's catalog.
>Anilist
Once again, second most popular behind Ashita no Joe 2.
1980 isn't exactly a big year, but Ideon is significantly higher and any older TV anime being more popular than adjacent movies from that time is significant (as a person going back to watch a movie will only need to spend about 70-90 minutes, whereas Ideon is about 16 hours long). For context, Terra e... was the most popular movie of the year (plus, it was also a year wherein a rendition of Astro Boy released, which Ideon consistently beat into third or fourth place from what I saw).

I mean, if its just performative outrage. I'd be fine. I use torrents, but I checked a streaming site since those are more popular. Ideon has 500k views, and demon slayer dubbed and subbed combined have 52 million views. That's despite demon slayer being newer and Ideon having 13 years to collect views and no legal streaming options. I dunno. Logically it feels like not many people watched it, but everytime I see an X post on an obscure anime with 10s of 1000s of likes, I get insecure...maybe this wasn't obscure after all.

Newer stuff is inevitably more popular than legacy stuff.
Think about it like this, Ideon has been around for over 40 years. Anyone who cared has been able to watch it in that time.
Everyone who cares about Demon Slayer has had that time compressed down to only a few years, with new things coming out every few months, in addition to all conversation around it happening in that time.

The Ideon TV series isn't that good, Be Invoked is where it's at. I'd recommend starting with episode 22 because it recaps and retcons a lot from the first half. That way you get more buildup and development than A Contact but skip some of the meaningless parts.

The trick with Ideon is that its viewership is a pyramid structured: people who saw a death compilation, people who watched Contact/Invoke alone, then people who actually watched the TV series and the movies.

The comparisons between it and Eva are pretty far fetched, I agree. I still think Kasha could have been at least a partial inspiration for Asuka though. She really did remind me of her a lot when I watched Ideon. I've also always thought, like some people in here say, that the pacing of the series isn't very good. It felt harder to get through than Gundam 0079 for instance. Be Invoked is great though.

There are no episode 40, 41, 42, and 43 though. Sure, it's more or less following the intention of the series' ending prior to being cancelled I imagine but it's not just a recut of TV episodes like you're seeming to imply. Much like how End of Evangelion isn't just a recut of the last 2 episodes of its TV series. You can see a significant increase in quality between what scenes from the series they do use in Be Invoked and the new content. And the ending of the TV series is just "The Ideon has been invoked. I wanted to say that the film follows the structure and formula of the show. We jump around from places in space, Ide going berserk, Karala suffering, Cosmo screaming passionately, Buffshits being evil and introducing their new weapon, discussion about nature and motivations of Ide, random animal shots, Lou Piper crying etc.
I was opposing the idea that Be Invoked and the tv show have some wide gulf in quality (episode structure and writing wise) when the film is following and repeating the same plot beats and formula.

I don't know how you don't seem to understand that what is in Be Invoked is not in the series itself. If these same events were in the series it would be just as good, but they're not and instead they put them into a movie with higher production values than what they would have been able to do in the series. I don't understand why you even brought it up in the first place as "it's episode 39 to 43 packaged as a film" is meaningless statement when episodes 40-43 do not exist. Since they had more time too they may have went back and polished what was there and rearranged some things too. Unless the storyboards are available for comparison there's no telling how similar Be Invoked is to what they had planned originally.

Maybe people feel like Be Invoked is better because it feels like a culmination while the series itself in the middle can feel repetitive. Or maybe it's just because the higher production values.

I watched it, obviously because it's from another time the pace is very very slow and you have to be patient, the problem is that many things are just there for the sake of being there and other things are recycled from their previous works, they have done this very often with their other works but in this one it's very noticeable, and another thing that really annoys me is having to watch the TV version which is incomplete and the movie version which changes a lot of things, now the interesting thing is the theme of survival at all costs because a fucking cosmic robot god wants to keep existing.
P.S. I love the damn opening, I listen to it all the time.

>Uhh, the enemy invades the protag's HQ and a lot of people die so they're the same
They're all surface level similarities that you can find in dozens of anime if you look.

I like the concept but like most Tomino shows it feels meandering and then when stuff does happen, it's more fucking absurd to the point of what the fuck is even going on. I should really give an attempt on his other stuff but it does feel like Gundam 79 and Zeta are his best works because his staff puts him in fucking check.

This is funny because of the Zeta rager that says Zeta sucked because nobody put Tomino in check.

Tomino is unwatchable. Watch some good mecha, such as Majestic Prince.
