the original Night Of The Living Dead's (which came out in 1968, by the way) copyright very famously expired because they fucked up the date on their copyright notice so per U.S law at the time it lapsed into the public domain. there's a decent amount of movies that, although they're not within the usual 95 years after release expiration date. lapsed out of copyright anyway because of an error of some kind. (other famous examples include the original 60s "Little Shop Of Horrors", 1954's "The Last Man On Earth" starring Vincent Price, "It's A Wonderful LIfe". and many 1930s and 40s era Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies/etc shorts)
Night Of The Living Dead is probably the most famous out of all the movies that have expired copyrights.
>If doing an original anime based on a western IP is pretty much unheard of?
there's a decent amount of anime based on western literature. like the World Masterpiece Theatre stuff. the Japanese also really fucking love America.
