If City is meant to be taken as an analogy for "life," with all these different stories that intertwine without even knowing it, and you need to take the good with the bad in life, then this motherfucker is definitely the latter. Possibly the biggest, most pointless waste of screen time given to a character in this show. My opinion only aligns with people who claim this show is neither funny nor entertaining when this dude is on screen.

Not everyone only finds out about manga after the anime is announced. Most people weren't even sure City would ever get an adaptation. "I can just read the manga later" doesn't make up for material not being adapted properly. That's basically falling into the "anime is an ad for the source material" mentality but at the same time saying you should consider it as a standalone thing.

I think this is a bad mentality and basically rewards studios for not understanding the material they're adapting. The point of an adaptation is to see parts of the manga adapted. If something you wanted to see adapted is adapted in a way that doesn't do it justice then that's grounds for criticism. And one of the things I liked about City the most (on top of its interconnectedness, which Kyoani is also affecting by cutting so many chapters showing how characters know each other) is how it did those few story arcs it had. But Kyoani didn't adapt any of them in full.

I'm 50/50 on agreeing with you, on this. I'm going to use LotR as an example: people praise the decision to cut Tom Bombadil (a decision the movie trilogy almost certainly nabbed from the BBC Radio drama, but I digress). I've always found that an important sense of wonder is lost in doing so, though, since LotR starts out as a more whimsical adventure like The Hobbit before the more serious events of the plot take off. It's a great contrast. In spite of losing that aspect, however, I do think the movie trilogy is actually pretty damn good as an adaption, even if far from perfect, and are very enjoyable as standalone pieces.

I feel the same is true of City, for the most part. Condensing entire volumes into long episodes loses content, but there's the spirit of the manga is still mostly left in tact.

I haven't seen people struggling to comprehend the Tekaridake segments until the anime. Is this another case of the anime butchering the jokes? In the manga, the joke that Nagumo is a lazy ass who refuses to do anything more than sit there so Tekaridake has to rewrite the script of a famous folktale to accommodate that is more obvious.
