>as I've gotten older, I've actually grown to appreciate cases with the Detective Boys
The detective boys cases have one thing the other setups miss: the dynamics aren't set in stone.
I mean, in Meitantei Conan roles and characters dynamics are very clear and not deviate because Gosho has very few panels to develop the characters.
1 Agase 2 Kogoro 3 Ran&Sonoko's dynamics are set in stone. Assuming the characters can evolve, they evolve on their own and not in relation to Conan. Same for the police officers.
The kids? The kids ARE evolving with Conan, although we don't see it much. We already saw it in the previous case. And that's without considering Haibara, the series' most evolving asset (which isn't much given the series' goals, but still).
Point is: Detective Boys feature
-Characters who aren't already "complete"
-Conan can't drug them, so he has to interact with them more, thus more originality as you point out.
-Haibara and her relationship with Conan, which evolves through the series
-The interpersonal tidbits between the kids
