Finished watching "The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today". I've never really had an interest in "slice of life" shows, but this one grabbed me, probably because it touches on the mundane things like "not wanting to go to work" and "wishing a 6' tall anthro-cat would take care of you like a personal butler in exchange for catfood". Has anyone else watched this show? What did you think?

Also would appreciate recommendations for similar "slice of life" shows. Only requests are:

Anyone else find the yuri subplot of "Masterful Cat" kind of weird and tacked on and unnecessary? I wanted to see more character development, not the writers b8ing a yuri love triangle around the protagonist for a potential season 2.

I'm looking forward to anime release of "Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You" next year. Mostly because I too am a 4X corpo-loser who'd just enjoy talking with 2X girls instead of having them ignoring me as if I was living garbage.

One thing I enjoyed from "Masterful Cat" that I did not mention is looking up all the mundane stuff referenced in the show (household cleaners, clothing like "japanese style kitchen apron", and so on). Learning about such mundane things is gratifying in its own way.

One thing I wonder is how common are these elaborate bentos or meals in day-to-day life in Japan? I'm guessing that they are not common at all and that it's just part of the joke or a character's "power level" that they are able to prepare such a feast effortlessly on a daily basis.

I do wonder what the demographics of anime watchers are in Japan. Do school-age kids really still make up the majority that so many shows try to appeal to them?
Or is it true that a nip's "best days" are during school and anime with young protagonists just tries to nostalgia-bait middle age office workers?

I enjoyed Kyuujitsu no Warumono. It has similar vibes to the OP show, but leans a bit more into the fantastic aspect.

I don't super have any recommendations I've seen that focus on the mundane aside from reverse isekai like "Devil is a Part-timer", "The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!", or "Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!".

But seeing someone bring up The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today makes me think of anime about adults getting a new pet maybe to help deal with trauma like "Kinokoinu" and "My Roommate is a Cat". There's also the currently airing "With You and the Rain" although that's pure chill and MC's thoughts about her work only sometimes pops up.

I think I'll also add "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish" to my list. The characters are young-ish, but my impression is that the show dives more into serious topics adjacent to disability and fighting for your goals instead of the "MC opens bathroom door without knocking and sees boobies before getting beaten up" cliches.

Oh yeah, also in the genre of overworked office ladies get a supernatural helper is "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid" and "Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby Ghost".

May as well also recommend some of PA Work's Working Girls shows like "Shirobako", "Sakura Quest", and "Hanasaku Iroha" (though this focuses on highschool-aged kids)

For me two main reasons:

I have nothing against people enjoying anime cliches around easy-to-solve misunderstandings, love triangles, "fall on someone and land on their boobs", and all the other shonen/ecchi cliches out there. I'm just tired of these tropes and want something more serious/relatable.

Even if more serious topics are tackled by a show's young protags the result looks goofy to me. How can I take a 14yo middle school student seriously when he talks about love, loss, or relationships? This is the same silliness as a 'group of high school students just killed God' and then talk about war/life/suffering. Immersion ruined. These are just young kids who've barely started living their lives.

It's been a while since I watched/read that but I remember it being cute but not really dramatic. It's mostly the characters hanging out (dating?) and talking about otaku stuff like games and anime.

I don't know if you're OP, but if you can suspend your disbelief for an anthropomorphic cat you should be able to for high school characters doing things. You seem to have some sort of prejudice against things, and misguided at that since you keep mentioning harem/ecchi related stuff when there's plenty of sol series with younger characters that aren't that.

School settings makes those topics very easy to write in and you can definitely make interpersonal drama with youths that can be taken seriously so this sounds like a personal problem

Nope, wrong. The relationship between "suspension of disbelief" and how mundane something is is inversely proportional.
Magic, mecha, and Santa Claus? None of these are real so suspending disbelief is easy.

Having read the show's description I think I understand why! Usually this kind of meandering show would be too slow even for me, but I'm intrigued by the setting and I love the kind of soft/fuzzy low-res animation style from the 80s and 90s before everything because so "sharp" and digital.
