>get crunchyroll
>series I want aren't even there, or essential parts are missing
is piracy inevitable?

Is it better for the industry to:
>Pirate/Stream a lot, pay only for what you want to physically own
>Purchase access to everything before you read it, minimize consumption

legality aside (it's legal here), what's best to do here morally?

>random foreigner reads my work illegally
>drops it and gives it a low score on MAL
>impacting further purchases of my work
If you think about it from an authors perspective, this would suck
Anonymous No.282106319 [Report] >>282106367
>>282106295
maybe the answer is just to stop giving bad reviews on series you haven't bought?
If, on the other hand, a bunch of foreigners who can't buy it in their language legally give a bunch of good reviews and make memes/ post about it online, it's a net positive right?
Anonymous No.282106367 [Report] >>282106408
>>282106319
An argument to try destroy this would be
>When it finally gets translated, the same people won't have any desire to buy it
any focus on legality rather than "what's best for the industry/ mangaka" could also work
Anonymous No.282106408 [Report] >>282106502 >>282106689

If people can't obtain a work when it's popular, it's short period of interest might die without ever getting picked up though, which would be negative for up and comers. Though you can't argue this for names in big publishers, like SJ, because only local support really matters in continuing series and anything associated with big names will be easy to find.
Anonymous No.282106502 [Report] >>282106538
>>282106408
Another point would be that
>Any artist universally despises being "paid in exposure", regardless if the effect really is positive or not
or even nicher ones like
>This artist doesn't actually want their work popularized at all
>This artist doesn't want foreigners looking at their work
but assuming author intentions other than a general growth of audience or profit is a NG tactic for this topic

Imagine if your work you labored over for years got really popular in overseas, like India only however; and very little money or attention domestically resulted. That'd make you depressed right?

And you got bad reviews on sites like MAL from hindi's in addition to this

It's literally a moral good. If you can, see about other ways of supporting the true creators, not the publishers, unless you know the publisher to be morally good and deserving of their supposed cut, which is of course almost never the case in rent seeking late stage capitalism.

Does internet piracy nullify the financial benefit of internet popularity for manga series?
Anonymous No.282106689 [Report] >>282106706 >>282106733
>>282106408
You could even argue the opposite, the popularity of internet piracy popularized the basest, lowest common denominator, low attention span garbage like Rent a girlfriend, or the isekai genre (Popularity of internet adoption probably correlates with isekai popularity) and served as a
>reduction to the mean
for the medium, because of its effects on the domestic market.
On the other hand, streaming/ piracy boost fan communities, which keeps the medium relevant among young people, who give it cultural strength, if you could only obtain it by purchasing (if the barrier to entry existed at all), its popularity in culture would definitely diminish.

It's not like games where there's a universal platform (steam), and obtaining them legally is more convenient and safe than the less official alternative.

Try crunchyroll for one of the few free-leech series.
Get this every time.

Maybe pure literature would be way more popular in the west if piracy were completely outlawed. If copyright was stricter, memes would be less entertaining, and therefore social media use might decline (hopeful interpretation) leading to a more social, more intelligent society.

you probably need Widevine or something, weirdly enough it doesn't stop me from taking screenshots anymore
Anonymous No.282106817 [Report]
I doubt any many author has officially supported piracy. Weirdly it seems ero-authors are the most vocal about wanting upfront payment. Is it because they mostly view it as a product, maybe a feeling of shame?

You're better off torrenting whatever you want--some groups offer DDL links as well--or even just watching what you want on a pirate streaming site (with an ad blocker). Crunchyroll and Netflix are tossers.

Streaming sites (of any kinda) usually don't have the extras that come alongside some rips of series, so you're missing out on extra content if there's any.

There's also the matter of licensing; what's offered in their library now might not be present sometime in the future. The only time I noticed that being an issue was when Funimation and Crunchyroll split, and at the start of the decade. There were a few series that were available to freely view on Crunchyroll's YouTube channel, that were taken down around 2020. The latter wasn't really an issue aside from with respect to convenience and discovering the occasional good series.

If you download what you want, it's easier to take screenshots and make maymays, and make relevant threads too.

Benefits of torrenting:
>better convenience
>often a better consumer experience
>beneficial for manga communities
>greater freedom to make fan works and memes
>oftentimes the only way to get access to everything in the series (e.g. gintama final film not available on crunchyroll in many countries)
>you don't have to support publishers who have weird social-political motives
>more reliable access, you actually own it as a digital file, it won't be rescinded randomly
>obviously cheaper also

Benefits of Streaming:
>you're supporting the original creator to an unknown extent

It's pretty hard to argue against it from a user experience perspective in this case

>you're supporting the original creator to an unknown extent
Not even that, the staff who drew the pictures have already been paid. The writers and directors and storyboarders have already been paid. The composers and soundtrack performers have already been paid.
By paying for a stream service you're at best supporting the studio itself, who might be collecting per-view residuals from Western services licensing their productions, but could just as easily have given those over for a flat rate in which case piracy causes zero harm to the industry.

Pirate and get really invested in a series and the rest of the author/director's work, and then buy any licensed material related to those series/works firsthand from Japan (not necessarily in person).

If a studios works keep on flopping on western streaming services, surely there'd be a negative impact at some point?
Anonymous No.282107064 [Report]
even if you forget the whole shitty availability and licensing part, CR streams just look worse on their browser player for some reason
I legit don't get it, since even if I play them on mpv the rips you get from torrents are supposedly just the same files

Purchasing the work shows the publisher that the author sells, thus putting in your vote to keep the author employed and their series alive. Giving them money directly does nothing for this.
Note: Crunchyroll plays no part in this process.
