That's just how I feel about. I'm someone who never liked the original. It's hideous and it's aged like milk. There are a few decent looking cuts in it but overall it's ugly. I didn't care too much for prog and alt but they were still better than the original. Grunge is definitely worse than the original though, fuck that shit. Shoegaze is quite a bit better than the other FLCLs though, not just the original. I actually found it somewhat tolerable. Better art, better character designs and personalities. I do find Harumi more engaging than anyone from the original.

For example Boogey Pukey was likely unique to his creator, and even if another person experienced the same situation the ghost would presumably come out as an entirely different being. But the exact details of how Ghosts work in PSG has always been rather muddy.

Ghost of Daten City showed that Stocking has a soft side that she doesn't show often, so really she's similar to Panty in that she seems to largely shun intimacy despite desiring it deep down. So if you wanted to write her seriously you could just give her something/someone that makes her drop the facade and show some vulnerability.
That said I don't think the problem is writing her seriously, it's writing her comedically. With Panty you've got literal centuries of sex jokes to draw from while with Stocking you've got a subculture that was popular in cartoons and porn longer than it was relevant in real life and some food and fat jokes. You could play up her masochism more but that's a sex thing so if you lean into it too hard you risk making her Panty 2.0 instead of Stocking.
