Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the thirty-fifth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>282097793

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

Cute cover. That little bit of screentone shading goes a long way.

Oh, Furinkan notes that: "In 2017 when volume 35 of Kyokai no RINNE went on sale, Rumiko Takahashi reached a total of 200 million copies of her work sold. "

They link a gallery of celebration artwork here: https://furinkan.com/features/articles/artists2.html Most of it features series other than Rin-ne, but I'll post the Rin-ne ones after the dump.

Japanese for gingerbread house is apparently ใŠใ‹ใ—ใฎๅฎถ (okashi no ie), so something like "sweets house" or "candy house". And yes, the sign in the corner was redrawn. It originally said "ใ”่‡ช็”ฑใซใŠ้ฃŸในใใ ใ•ใ„" (go jiyลซ ni o tabe kudasai). Most places seem to translate it to "Please help yourself" but VIZ seemed to go with a more literal translation here.

In Japanese, the distinction being made here is ้ญ”ๆณ•ใฎใ‚ฆใƒ‹ใƒฉใ‚คใ‚น (mahล no uniraisu) rather than ใ‚ฆใƒ‹ไธผ (unidonburi). ไธผ refers to either a bowl or in this context, a bowl of rice with food on top.

Magic ketchup is ้ญ”ๆณ•ใฎใ‚ฑใƒใƒฃใƒƒใƒ— (mahล no kechappu) in Japanese. The bottle's text was written in English in the original panel as well (resembles a Heinz one pretty closely). The CM on the stomach appears to just mean "commercial" as Renge referred to it as "ใ‚ฆใƒ‹ใƒฉใ‚คใ‚นCM" with the Furigana ใ‚ทใƒผใ‚จใƒ  for the last part. So, just sea urchin commercial.

I think I haven't had a chance to post the bit about Kain from the 2018 interview with Rumiko Takahashi:

"In some way, I created this character to be Rinneโ€™s rival or someone who opposed him, but due to some reasons at work, the idea of him being a lower-ranked public worker took shape. But, on the contrary, thanks to that reason it was fun to draw him. Kainโ€™s not a really cool type, but I think thatโ€™s rather good."

Original title was ็ฒ‰ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใฎๆ‚ฒๅЇ. VIZ seems to have done a pragmatic localization rather than a direct translation. Both Google and Furinkan went with "The Flour Tragedy". ็ฒ‰ใ‚‚ใ‚“ (konamon) refers to food made from flour (especially okonomiyaki and takoyaki) per a Japanese dictionary. So, VIZ decided talking about flour would be confusing and referred to it specifically being festival foods, which is what it is referring to in context.

Momotarล, Urashima Tarล and Kintarล are all heroes from Japanese fairy tales that use this suffix in their name.

ใƒ’ใƒข (himo) for the third time this manga. As before, it refers to a string but can also refer to either a pimp or a man who is financially dependent on a woman (such as someone being pimped out).

The last two times, VIZ localized it as Sakura Mamiya suggesting that Ageha was Rinne's pimp and Anju suggesting that Sakura Mamiya was Rinne's pimp. I assume in this case, the sinner was the pimp himself. I will say, I am just going to assume that ใƒ’ใƒข does not sound nearly as salacious in Japanese as the word pimp does in English.

The word used for crush here was more specific as it referred to one-sided crushes like in the final panel. ็‰‡ๆ€ใ„ (kataomoi), unrequited love. Rokumon's mean line referred to her as ็‰‡ๆ€ใ„ใฎใ‚นใƒšใ‚ทใƒฃใƒชใ‚นใƒˆ (kataomoi no supesharisuto), so using a loanword from the English word "specialist".

Jumonji has stated his crush on Sakura Mamiya aloud in front of Sakaki. Also, Sakaki referred to it as ใใใƒ€ใ‚ตใ„ๆ นไป˜ (kuso dasai netsuke) which Google Translated as "really lame netsuke". You can also go with "crappy, lame netsuke". Netsuke apparently being a word ๆ นไป˜ for a miniature sculpture used as a button fastener for pouches and whatnot. I guess this isn't really a keychain after all, but it is pretty close in concept.

Oh, a full on Halloween chapter? We had something sort of close before but it was school festival themed. With a pumpkin headed damashigami. Anyway, this chapter's name is ็ฒพ้œŠๅฌๅ–š (seirei shลkan) originally. ็ฒพ้œŠ can mean spirit, but it can also be used as a translation of the Western word "elemental" (per Japanese Wikipedia), so I think VIZ got that in this context, elemental is more accurate.

Yuji Yokoyama drew from a fair bit of series as well. Including the rather obscure Talent Show Judge from Chapter 215 of Urusei Yatsura. I am not familiar with his work, but Furinkan lists Sunday Hi Kagaku Kenkyujo as the series of his that was running at the time though googling that does not lead to any other results than the Furinkan page in question. His Japanese wikipedia page seems to suggest that this was ใ‚ตใƒณใƒ‡ใƒผ้ž็ง‘ๅญฆ็ ”็ฉถๆ‰€. His ongoing series is Tokachi Hitoribocchi Nลen, which does have a Wikipedia page in English.

Here is that segment of the 2019 interview on the subject:

"[Q:] On the other hand, Tamako's son, (Rinne's father) Sabato, is also a strong character. They say he's good-looking yet garbage (laughs). However, I was still impressed by the great character development that made it hard to completely hate him.

Takahashi: What he's doing is really trashy (laughs). But I had a lot of fun drawing that scumbag. There aren't many villains or enemy characters in Kyokai no RINNE, so I had no choice but to have Sabato play that role.

[Q:] Also, as I was reading the story, I was wondering why Rinne's mother didn't appear, but she makes an impactful appearance towards the end.

Takahashi: As for Rinne's mother, I had been thinking about bringing her into the story, but I had a hard time finalizing her character, and she ended up appearing only at the end of the story. When I came up with the idea of her being reincarnated and being younger than Rinne, I thought I had done it (laughs). As you know, this family usually lives separately, but in one of the last chapters, there was a story about a family trip that ended up happening, albeit by accident."
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.282186012
>>282175830
>>282185966
And the section from the editor interview in 2024:

"[Q:] Sabato, the father of Rinne Rokudo, the main character in Kyokai no RINNE is also a scoundrel, and even Takahashi-sensei herself calls him "a real scum" (from "Rumiko Takahashi Book"), but he's somehow unbearable. While he is a scoundrel who co-signs his son on his debts, flirts with women, and commits fraud, he is also a man with a good heart who has been secretly searching for his wife, who suddenly disappeared.

"Moriwaki: I believe that every villain has the conscience of his creator, Takahashi-sensei, running through his veins. At the end of RINNE, there is a story where the Rokudo family, who had been separated, and the heroine Sakura Mamiya somehow come together at a hot spring ("Inn of Memories"). That chapter is so heartwarming, I love it. Takahashi-sensei was also happy and said, "I'm glad they were able to go on a family trip.""

Per Furinkan: "Kento Moriwaki (ๆฃฎ่„‡ๅฅไบบ) was the final editor on Kyokai no RINNE and the first editor on MAO. He is also the editor responsible for getting Rumiko Takahashi to join Twitter. "

I find it funny how both interviewers emphasized that Sabato may be awful, but he's not all that bad. Also, I think the might've mistranslated the interviewer's first sentence there.
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.282186912
Interesting bit from that editor interview in 2014:

"Moriwaki: Okamoto wanted to become a manga editor because of Inuyasha.

Okamoto: When I was in elementary school, I lived in a rural town in America, and my classmate asked me things like, "Do Japanese people eat bugs?" "Do Japanese people spend their time naked?" No matter how much I tried to argue with her, she wouldn't listen to me, but as soon as she fell in love with Inuyasha, she said, "I'm definitely going to move to Japan!"

I was shocked to learn that interesting manga transcends racial barriers and national borders and touches the heart. I also wanted to be involved with a work that has overwhelming power and captivates the world on a par with Inuyasha."

Wonder where it was.
