My fellow Americans are becoming unhinged (regardless of political leanings). So many people on here have bought into delusions that make them think every political decision and election is a zero sum game. It's constantly the other side is trying to genocide my side, so we're seeing an increase in political violence for the first time in ~50 years (between 1960 - 81, peaking in the late 60s/early 70s). There's a mass paranoia taking over the country, and most people aren't even aware of it.
In this sense, Paranoia Agent was both reflective and prescient. Kon was inspired by the social on goings of Japan at the time he started the project, but it speaks very much to the world today, especially because the internet allows the mass delusion to metastasize a lot quicker and further.
