Anyone kinda feel like Dandadan is like a decade or two behind other shonen but in a good way? Like its ideas aren’t that original, it’s not really deep, and I’m not incredibly invested in its stakes, but compared to most popular recent shonen it doesn’t fall into the current common ideas that bore me. It just feels like something that wouldn’t be made nowadays kinda like dragon ball, urusei yatsura, etc wouldn’t be extremely popular if they were made today.

Yes, it's legitimately rooted in old school otaku styling. I keep thinking of Sundome because of all the classic occult side plots and the gyaru and the entire teenage hornemotion theming. Both Okarun and Kinta follow the older tropes for otaku characters rather than the more mainstream versions proliferating now. Pretty much the only thing missing from Kinta are swirly glasses. Dandadan also takes up the standard otaku quests for individual passion and a community of other weirdos. This episode gave us a perfect example of a situation where the solution is that the imagination of the otaku is the key to changing reality and saving the day which is one of the most common ways of turning the otaku figure into a heroic one.

At the same time it feels very contemporary as well, like an actual update of the aesthetics and values rather than just a repetition. The attention to female characters and all the forms of violence against women that come up as serious issues marks it as a firm step forward.
