i have a similar problem as i did with the original android saga --- how can some scientist build a machine that can even hold a candle to namek-era goku? cell makes sense, but the androids make none

rehashing cell was weaksauce, and even then they only used him as a brutish monster. the original cell was fun because he was cunning and eloquent

piccolo having a latent ability that can rival super saiyan gods feels unearned. it would be different if there was buildup to this all throughout DB, or if there was a very high cost like permanently absorbing the dragon balls or some shit

gohan's latent ability has been touched on many times throughout the series, but in this it feels like he's rewarded with too much too fast. unearned

and while we're on the subject of power scaling, we don't constantly need to boost everyone's power so they make sense next to super saiyan gods. it was the same problem during the tournament of power. canonically, we know roshi would've gotten his ass handed to him in a bare knuckle fight against even raditz. so if you want to make him useful, you have to make him cunning. more focus on techniques and strategy, less on just 'omg, he trained and unlocked more power'. that's super fucking lazy

the whole thing feels very disconnected from the rest of DB Super, and only further drives the 'choose your own adventure' attitude towards what is or isnt canon at the current time

all that said, i do like the general idea of 'oh, goku and vegeta are busy. time to let some other characters shine'. gero's grandson and the gammas are also fine characters. it all just could've been handled better

I was given quite a bit of freedom working on GT, so aside from whether they were animated or not, the ideas were limitless. For each character, plenty of subplots existed that never made it to the screen.
For instance, in Gohan’s case, there was apparently so much as an “Ultimate Gohan” concept in Dragon Ball Z, where he was a super-warrior with might surpassing Goku, but in GT, he’s a scholar who’s given up fighting almost entirely. But for someone who had given up fighting like that to return to the front lines, I thought that naturally there needed to be quite a bit of drama involved.

Around the Super 17 arc in the animation, he came back as a super-warrior all of a sudden, but actually, I personally wanted to put in a heroic episode telling the reason he started fighting again. For instance, people he loved, like Videl, had been hurt, and when in the depths of anguish, he happened to open up his wardrobe, inside was his dōgi from fondly-remembered times. Together with the line, “To think there’d come a day I’d wear this again…”, he brushes off Chi-Chi, who in tears is trying to stop him, and makes a shocking, lightning entrance on the battlefield. Considering the status of the character, I wanted to spend one or two episodes showing that level of resolve, and I recall having even written the plot for it. my brother is in 6th grade and he asked me to watch Dragon Ball. we watched it in dub but we watched it in an unorthodox way that I think is simply better. Because we started watching it via a fan made edit of OG Dragon Ball called "Dragon Ball Recut". Which removes the filler and thus cuts OG Dragon Ball to 82 episodes instead of 153. After we watched that we started watching Kai and we're around episode where Piccolo finds Cell for the first time. We did watch some Z episodes instead of Kai because the Z versions were better. e.g. we watched Vageta go Super Saiyan for the first time in Z with the American soundtrack since it's the best version. When we get to Gohan going ssj2 for the first time we're watching the Z version as well with the Japanese soundtrack since it's the best version, aka we wont watch the Kai version of the Episode. Also I forgot to mention we we already watched Bardock special during the Namek Episodes and we watched History of Trunks after 17 and 18 were introduced.

After the Cell Saga is over we're going to continue watching via the Z dub and not the Kai dub. since the final chapters sucks and the director from episode 200 onwards is different and thus the filler style is different. Kai wouldn't be needed anymore except 3 or 4 episodes that are better in Buu Saga Kai than in Z (e.g. Vageta's sacrifice, You Are Number 1 speech).

After we're done with the Buu Saga and EoZ I'm revealing the truth to my brother which is that we just finished watching the canon stuff. And that there are also filler stuff which are extra entertainment based on the canon. and that we can watch them as well. the filler stuff are the filler episodes and arcs in OG and Z as well as all the movies and OVAs. as well as GT, Super and Daima. we can watch them as extra entertainment id he wants to.

I'll recommend starting with episode 1 honestly. I think the adventure with Bulma and the training with Roshi and Krillin episodes are comfy. and the 21st tournament follows immediately. after the 21st tournament are the two weakest arcs in the series which are back to back (Red Ribbon Army arc and Fortuneteller Baba arc). But I'd recommend getting through them anyway since they're not terrible. The 22nd tournament follows immediately after. So I don't think there is a need to skip anything if you're watching the Recut version. Obviously there are sexual gags during the adventure with Bulma and training with Roshi. But they're not awkward to watch with your mom since since they're not erotic and they're actually funny aka they are actual gags and not undercover ecchi.

btw the same guy that made this recut of OG (WhereIsTheMilkMan) made a recut of Kai (98 episodes to 82 episodes). Which is pointless since Kai is already a recut. So you can have your mother watch the OG Recut and then just watch Kai the normal way.

It helped us through a tough period kek. I remember biking to a coffeeshop for internet to download the camrip of the Super Hero movie.

I think a large part of the appeal for them was watching it from the beginning. Before I showed it to them in full they said it looked boring. My dad and I used to watch episodes of DBS as they were coming out weekly on the tv. The girls thought it looked lame despite these being regarded as some of the best in the franchise. It was only after we started watching from the beginning that they really enjoyed Super. They were super hyped when super Saiyan was in the intro for Kai. They cried at the end of GT when Goku flew away with shenron. They're more outwards with how they feel when they watch stuff than me kek. This is all to say, just give it a try. Make a routine out of watching it and they'll definitely want to tune in day by day. It was the highlight of my sister's days.
One funny thing to note is they had a hard time of grasping the timeline between GT and Super. They had to ask multiple times where UI is in GT.

Is dragon ball super worth watching? Just finished the Kid Buu battle with my parents and it legit felt like an awesome ending so far, had it ended there.
But then Toriyama writes EoZ and one is left itching for more... to which, GT is the direct continuation, and we already watched it that way years ago.

This time I'm debating on just ending at Z or perhaps going into Super, but the contrast will be so big. Buu saga is so solemn, full of sacrifices and emotions, extreme violence in fights and characters acting like mature adults with their own midlife crises or wanting the next generation to succeed them, etc.. Then you jump into DBS and it's more like a generic shonen anime with the MCs only living to fight new strong guys and that's the entire plot. I dunno.

Super is a long series that has production quality issues
Daima is a short series that has a high production quality

now Daima's issue is that production started before the scripting was over and it can sometimes show. But I think for most people this wont be noticeable so just enjoy it for what it is. Watching it is straight forward since it's 20 episodes long.

Meanwhile with Super the animation sucks in the first half so you will have to bear with it. and with Super this is the watch order:

I agree OG dub Goku is the best. But for dub Gohan Kai = Z. They're about the same. I remember after after Namek was over I showed my brother a youtube video with voice comparisons of dub Gohan and he said the Kai was his favorite. The only thing I'm torn up about is Android 18's voice. Her Z voice is way better than her Kai voice and by several orders of magnitude too.

as for Vageta all the Majin stuff are better in Z. except the farewell sacrifice episode. that's better in Kai. so we're going to watch the Kai version of that. and we're then gonna go back and continue watching in Z. Oh yeah skip the inside of Buu segments too. The one where Goku and Bejita fight the clone fighters and those intestinal worms. Those are really shit filler episodes. Cut from CHADai, of course. If your brother isn't a friend of slice of life you may want to skip the filler great saiyaman episodes where he goes on a date and shit. Kai cut out a lot of them but not all of them Z (they kept the part where he saves the dragon for some reason).
