Yes she did and they had a whole unseen mini relationship that was such a shitshow it feels like it didn't really happen, which is what not actually showing it in the show is meant to evoke.

At some point(some theorize the episode where Misato goes on that date) Asuka's advances on Shinji work, in the sense that she gets so fed up she fully initiates and makes it happen.

Shinji kind of wants it to happen but it doesn't overcome his fundamental fear of intimiacy, vulnerability, generally being open with other people, because he's so afraid of rejection and judgement if they don't like the deeper parts of him they see.

This leads Asuka to flying into a rage, because she just threw herself at him, fully had sex at age 14, and he's lying there just as distant and closed off as he was at the start. She has gotten none of the connection she was seeking to fill the void of unconditional love left by her mother, nor the sense of being a fully realised adult such that she feels more comfortably distant from her traumatised childhood because it was such a nothing farce. It was all for nothing.

This leads to the coffee pot scene where Shinji starts strangling her. Shinji does not understand what happened at all, and belatedly, as a teenage boy, decides he wants this to continue, so in an absurdly delayed reaction does develop an infatuation with Asuka he interprets as love and tries to "step up" and reciprocate her affection in order to try and start a proper relationship(even shinjis brain will go to great lengths to try to get more sex once its processed things a bit). Its too little too late for Asuka, who has been pretty much traumatised by the first encounter and basically hates him. She also sees through what he thinks is love and a genuine desire for a relationship-she knows he isn't in touch enough with himself for even this to be authentic. He's confused. There's a little of his true self and true affection and a lot of "isn't this what I'm meant to be doing? Is this how you act like a guy in a relationship when you love a girl(want more sex)." Its too late and like, 5 percent of what she wanted at best.

This reaches a boiling point because she's trying to get him to fuck off, but in having "opened himself up" at last to the degree of now actively pursuing her and expressing desire for her, his autism about being rejected is now crazy sensitive. He's way more out there than he's ever been before, and she's stonewalling and seething at him and wants him to die. That's why this moment leads into the Komm Susser Todd montage. What is she thinking just sitting there not answering? He can read a lot of bad into it, but he can't know, because they're seperate people, which is tormenting Shinji and showcasing the intrinsic anxiety and fear of being seperate people, of the state of affairs that is the opposite of instrumentality.

I don't know if Shinji actually strangled her in real life. It might be that thats just something he did at the end of this recollection, as he lost his mind and descends into despair. Or it might be that it did happen, and Asuka kind of let it happen because him being worked up enough to start strangling her is the most earnest, closest thing to love she's gotten from him yet, that he wants her enough to strangle her because she shut him out. On shinjis side however, its less direct love and more "I can't stand that you're there judging and thinking bad things about me but I can't know exactly what, I can't stand this wondering what you're thinking. Its better if you're just gone". Hence at the end of the movie when Asuka comes back from instrumentality, when Shinji has to deal with being a person again and there being another person there whose thoughts he can't control or fully know, he tries to kill her in fear of the return to that dynamic, and a show of affection is what makes him relent. I interpret "feels disgusting" to not be about shinji, but viscerally about being back in a human body all by herself, having to paw at others to try and access them.
