Mazinger z manga and anime are canon to eachother in weird ways. You can read the manga but you need to watch the anime to know more of the characters.

Mazinger Z is an old shounen and the anime is different of the manga, they are not canon to each others. It's also a very "old school" story like Go Nagai know to do who will just feel very cheesy if you are not used to read old mangas. the anime is a "monster of the weeks" basically. both are interesting if you get into it. Mazinger Z like most of Nagai mangas is a very free universe where you have tons of different canons.

Mazinger Z is also a "Super Robot" mecha which mean it's more super hero and shounen oriented. It's different with "Real Robots" made later like Gundam who focus on world building with factions, wars and more "realistic" plots.

If you wanna start mechas, try stuff "more modern" like Evangelion.

You can read the manga if you really want some old shit. Its only 5 volumes, light enough for speedreading and holds up decently enough. Getter Robo is a better read though, if you insist on starting with classic stuff.

Or you can just go into Mazinkaiser or Shin Mazinger if you insist on starting with Mazinger but dont wanna read old shit.

If you wanna get into "mecha" as a genre just watch the gateway series like Eva, Gurren Lagann, and whatever Gundam series catches your attention the most. You'll stumble into other shit from there.

The anime and manga were made concurrently. The manga is worse than the anime imo too. It starts really good but the chapters are too short and it doesn't have an ending, it just cuts off. The anime at least has a beginning, middle, and end even if some of the episodes are shit.

Gundam deserves to overshadow everything because it's good. At least through the 90s. For someone criticizing non-super robot shows you should know what it's like when a genre you don't care for overshadows everything else. And I'd feel the same way if everything was super robot since I don't really care much for that.

Although maybe you should watch G-Reco if you haven't already. It has some stuff that reminded me more of super robot stuff than some of the earlier Gundam series. I guess Tomino felt some nostalgia for that kind of thing in the 2010s.

Gundam doesn't even come out that often. It's only really been the last couple of years with WfM and G-however you spell it, and I doubt those are keeping people from making super robot series. There's probably just no demand for them. Though I heard of that series called Shikalion or whatever it was. That was a kids series iirc but still, probably more what you're wanting.

Not to mention that both G-Witch and the more recent series have school battle arena plot points, which isn't what you usually get with Gundam. I have no interest in them as a Gundam fan but they are different from what you're complaining about.

While the main character is a highschooler the clan battles in GQuX don't have anything to do with school.
Also while I don't want to say the clan battles aren't important to the show they're more a vehicle for world and character building rather than being a focus in their own right.
