For me I think that'd be a pretty hard question to answer honestly without going back and rewatching it with that in mind.
There might be some scenes that aren't strictly necessary, but also it's a whole sub plot with character development and such. So not easy to just brush things off like that without really thinking about it in whole context.
But I also think if the one chad guy char wasn't gay(Gwen), the same people complaining about the 'gay stuff' would instead probably be complaining that he's NTR bait or something similarly silly.

I've been to Kowloon a few times, but would have loved to see the real Walled City.
