I think the guy who did Narutaru fell into utter despair and nihilism at some point around where the anime cuts off. This is a man at the bottom of his life and it's distinct from the darkness in his previous and later manga. By the end it's a continuous stream of misery and vileness. Ultimately the only solution was to kill all normal life on the planet and scrape it clean.
