Depends on how the feedback works, it could just level off and reach a despair plateau. Any new amount of despair or hope would induce a despair or hope boost, that would level off again. Like nudging a toy car and watching it roll until it comes to a standstill.
Alternatively, despair could work linearly or exponentially, meaning we could either potentially overcome any despair feedback loop with enough hope or not.
