On another topic, why were the main characters's names localized, but not the rest of them. Tenei certainly doesn't sound like an english name. Or is this an exception since they're at an obviously japanese temple?

The main characters were localized because of the anime dub, on the mandate of some higher-up, probably from the Japanese side.
This does not extend to random characters like these though, and given how they have to explain that these aren't the actual Japanese names of the main cast in stuff like the detective intro pages, the translators don't seem particularly keen on this either.

I've read the Roman Hat Mystery the other day, can't say I was impressed. The mystery itself was fine, but the investigation and characters were not really captivating. I'll try the Egyptian Cross, but this in not something I'd be picking off my shelf second time around.

It's farfetched, but they do mention the walls are coated. Normally, you would still expect some water there I suppose, though. As for the noise, the waterfall is right next to the room and also appears to be crushing at some part of the hill there so I guess they would hear the constant sound of water anyway, the difference probably wouldn't be so noticeable.
