I don't have an issue doing this even with extremely obviously canonically Japanese characters like this, but I imagine lots of people are like me on the first part, and their image of attractive anime drawings actually being whites is getting disrupted, which annoys them.

You know, in a really weird way, you're right. I was wondering why Solo Leveling was so popular, and I think a large part of it is because the protagonist embraces (in the crudest way possible) the alpha male stereotype.
He's got incredible drip, he's handsome, he kills people, he's stoic and doesn't take shit from anyone. He's a hypercapitalist superpredator.
Compare that to most male anime protagonists, who are (generally speaking) very shy, or very loud and silly.
This is also why Tanjirou is really popular, because he's a genuinely decent dude who isn't embarrassing.

This is shown by how even the most shallow power fantasy isekai slop at least gives lip service to being a good person. The protagonist might get revenge on his oppressors once he becomes strong and possibly even do horrible shit like rape them, but he'll also find new people who did nothing wrong and treat them better than he was treated. Japs understand that the cycle of revenge is evil and that once you've punished the actual wrongdoers, the right thing to do when you hold power is to be better to the weak and innocent.
In Korea, there's nothing wrong with the system. There's only something wrong with you for not being on top.

Yeah but that's all he is. He isn't particularly cool or funny. Tanjiro would be a lot more interesting if we saw him struggle to stay virtuous. To do what is right when doing what's wrong is the easy way out. The only time the show came anywhere close to that was when he had to pick between saving some children and saving Nezuko. And ultimately he was able to save both because Nezuko is immune to the sun :)

I'd rather want a loser who stays and dies as a loser and even after his "pointless and senseless" death, people still remember him as a loser and as a retard as well because he died in a seemingly senseless atonement outburst. However, one or 2 people manage to see his "worth" because of feeling identified and after knowing why he died, then his death trigger a positive change in stranger people. Not necessarily a crush, but a kid or a kid and a single mommy who can relate to his suffering.

Naruto's Jiraiya as an MC would have been intwresting as he was the weakest and unluckiest sannin, and even his death was seen as somethimg retarded, but at least, he managed to prepare Naruto.
