Pretty sure for nobility at least they expect non-genetic Abh to do genetic modification for their children, like Jinto even if he were to not end up with Lafiel or another Abh girl would be expected to have his children be genetically modified or like that one nobleman who's dumbass son held Jinto and Lafiel hostage for a while when they were trying to get away to deliver a warning after the ship they were on was attacked in the first part of the story.

I really liked this one. Starship Operators especially scratched that itch of wanting jargon heavy ship stuff. While we're bringing up stuff, Bodacious Space Pirates ended up being a lot more sincere a sci fi series than I was going to expect. Though apparently the writer is also pretty old school, having done stuff like Ariel and working on Venus Wars, so it so shows. God I'd love another season, dem solar sails.

That's because, at least in what's shown on the screen, Stars is doing science fiction worldbuilding extrapolating how warfare is shaped by technology, and has to provide quirk chungus admirals to keep the audience invested while it's playing out. LoGH just doesn't care about the tech, they have shields or something, whatever, the fleets are there to show off the characters, this character is fast so his ships are fast, this one is smart so he can set up bomb traps etc. And LoGH puts a lot more love into the feeling of what it's like on the ships, the FPA being ascetic and cold compared to the curvy Imperial ships with marble pillars, while Stars puts more effort into what it feels like to be in space. Just different focuses.

Apollo never had major public support for example, a handful of influential people pushed it through. Only among themselves. It also seems all their gene therapy is in vitro. There isn't much talk of children or adults modifying their genes. In fact it seems to landers who restrict gene editing amongst themselves, as most find it distasteful, except perhaps when there is a medical necessity. Even the creation of the Abh as living machines seems to have been an illegal or at least strongly discouraged act that was taken out of desperation.

I remember differently in that the enemies attempted haymaker opening gambit failed, and while their MINES MINES MINES doctrine had initial success, the Abh pushed them back once they had adapted their own doctrine. I dunno what happens in the later novels, but it seemed to me that The enemies main strategy had failed with their Capital surprise attack and they hadn't really prepared for a total war scenario given how much they bet on their century of planning knock-out blow strategy.
