I was very excited for it. Mappa, Watanabe, AS Dub. The show fucking blows. The "climax" was garbage, the ending of season 1 was a nothing burger, the cast had literal negative synergy with each other. The writing was atrocious.

I made the joke about skinner at the camp on episode 3 because I figured it'd be too retarded to be true, but the show is just that retarded. I'm really disappointed in all parties involved. At least the opening is good.

I recall Patalliro having men dress as women and have vicious gay sex, and while they were seen as men, dressing as a woman was never something unquestionable.
Yu Yu Hakusho had Yusuke fight a pre-op tranny, but at the end he just tells them to go all the way as a man or a woman and not inbetween. Not exactly "you'll never be a woman".

People are using as example Hana, from Tokyo godfathers, but the fact that Hana was a tranvesitite, transgender or whatever you may call her is irrelevant. WHY? i hear you ask, because the story doesnt dwell on that fact other than to make some jokes and to stablish that she is in love with Jin. While in Lazarus there were some "lighthanded" agenda stuff and "needed" to be told to check some checkboxes, in Tokyo godfathers Hana's sexuality is just an element of the story, one that doesnt feel shoehorned nor forced because Satoshi Kon's movies where so masterfully written. Hana ending as a homeless was because she worked as a entertainer, but she punched a patron, and to not cause problems for her boss, she decided to leave without saying a word. This is only relevant because In Tokyo Godfathers our 3 main characters have redemption arcs. Hana's meet up with her ex boss is one of them. And not. a. single. time. Kon use that as a victim trigger, unlike Lazarus.

Not really, there was serious tonal issues because Watanabe wanted to do something more lighthearded and adult swim wanted something more dark and serious. Plus the big twist is given away in episode 3 and it takes nearly the rest of the series of them dicking around to figure it out.

Doesn't help that the plot is "most of humanity will die in 30 days unless you find the mastermind who can make the cure" again, they practially gave away who he was in ep 3

Kinda funny that starting this show recently with friends, I only saw the 'EMMY NOMINATED' tag on the show headliner image the day we watched this episode. When you sit there and talk about how great it is to be homeless and how cool and chill they are (when in most cases they have mental illnesses that make them unapprochable), introduce a transgender character, and add in a story about a black man fighting the system and getting punished, and all one after the other.
I've never had issues with it in things like Tokyo Godfather, or the joke crossdressing characters in various shows, or even something more serious like Wandering Son. Hell, I even like how they handled everything in Wamdering Son and the artstyle is nice. This show was fun too. It's just when you are VERY OBVIOUSLY trying to placate a certain subgroup of people so overtly I can only roll my eyes and call it a hamfisting of the topic and shoehorning it in to check off boxes of that subgroup.

I dont mind trans stuff in anime because (from what little of it that Ive seen) it seems like Japan always does it without the mental illness.
The trans characters always acknowledge that they were originally one gender and then made a choice to try and become the other. Sometimes the ones who are just drag queens (as in they havent had any hormone therapy or surgery) will even acknowledge that they are still males. The point is that they acknowledge that being trans is a choice, and they don't try to claim that they were a female all along.

Although I havent read anything with trans people in it that was written in the last few years, so maybe that's changed.
