Also let me remind you, Japan lost in WW2 on essentially three factors: rigid thinking, abysmal logistics and engineering, and lack of resources.

Beyond the gate, being centuries behind, will buy literally anything from Japan, and trade mountains of gold and precious resources like negroes did for calico and glass beads.

They set up a military base and get to work obliterating the Empire's army, rescuing the kidnapped civilians, and forcing war reparations. They kick so much ass that the Empire falls into a civil war over different royals wanting to deal with them in different methods. MC is an otaku special forces member who is super lazy and insubordinate, but doesn't get fired because he's REALLY good at his job. He negotiates with one of the royals and gets around 4 waifus, one of which is an immortal demi-goddess. Meanwhile, the US, Russia, and China are trying to force Japan to give them the gate (due to it containing an entire world's worth of resources) but they incompetently get in each others way and are gloriously defeated by the honorable Japanese politicians (except for the ones that were killed by the immortal demi-goddess). The portal being open for so long is causing problems across the fabric of reality, so they have to close it. Some JSDF soldiers choose to stay in the fantasy world, including MC.

I enjoyed that about the series. Even 10-20yr US tech is still 90-95% better than the rest of the world. You'd have to be another power country like the UK or Germany to be in that 5%, the rest of the world have dudes riding camels and attaching guns to old toyotas. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of colonialism. Colonial states generate next to no culture on their own - they import the vast majority of it through cultural appropriation. Just think about how little real culture America has. It basically boils down to cowboy hats. If you look at any legitimate white savior/ western colonialist story, like Avatar, it is always about a white guy intruding somewhere and eventually being welcomed as the "best" of the culture he enters.

Japan is a former imperial power though, and one of its coping mechanisms is to aggrandize its own culture. That's why cultural exportation plays such a huge part in its colonial fantasies (isekai). It can't fantasize about being The Last Samurai or Dances With Wolves, because that would imply the other culture might have more to offer than Japan, which contradicts their foundation myth.

So you get weird works like Gate, where Japan fantasizes about the opposite of what a current imperial power would fantasize about. America fantasizes about importing culture from somewhere else, Japan fantasizes about just having a colonized class to exploit.
